James patted himself on the back for a job well done. Inviting the Weasley’s and Granger’s down for Harry’s birthday had been one of his best ideas ever.
“Stop it.” Regulus chuckled at him.
“What?” James said, as he looked at his husband in confusion.
“Looking so smug.” Regulus lightly smacked his shoulder. “This was a great idea, well done you.” Regulus huffed a laugh.
“What can I say?” James grabbed Regulus and spun him into his arms. “You married a genius. Look how happy our kid is.”
Regulus leaned back into James’ chest and rested his own hands on the arms James had wrapped around his waist.
“Yeah,” Regulus agreed softly.
They stood there watching Harry and his friends having a great time.
Harry, Ron and Hermione were running in and out of the climbing frame den, the new puppy chasing them.
Percy, Molly’s middle child, was currently playing lawn chess with Monty and Arthur.
Molly’s two oldest, Bill and Charlie, were deep in conversation with Remus and the Granger’s about options for their exam classes coming up in the new school year.
The twins, Fred and George, were huddled with Sirius near the back of the garden and James knew nothing good could come from that.
“Reggie, darling?” Effie appeared at their side, but neither James nor Regulus broke their hold on the other as they tuned to look at Effie. “Do you want to do Harry’s cake now?”
Regulus was often more than happy to hand over the running of things to Effie when they had family parties, but the cake was always his responsibility.
James released his arms and Regulus ran back into the house for the cake.
“WHO WANTS CAKE?” James shouted at the garden full of guests.
A raucous cheer went up from the many, many children littered around their back garden and James was glad they’d set the food table up outside, because the stampede heading towards him would have broken many things inside their house.
“Right you lot, sit your tiny butts down and get ready to sing your lungs out.” James instructed.
All the children burst into laughter at James’ use of the word butt and James was pleased with himself all over again.
“James.”
James turned around and watched as Regulus came out holding the cake very carefully before he placed it down on the table in front of Harry and leaned down to light the candles.
James and Regulus stood behind Harry and each of them placed a hand on one of his shoulders as Sirius led the whole group, adults and children alike, in a very loud and rambunctious rendition of Happy Birthday. The twins giving Sirius a run for his money with their overdramatic performance.
When the singing ended, Regulus and James crouched down at Harry’s side.
“Make a wish, sweetheart.” Regulus told him quietly.
Harry scrunched up his face and closed his eyes tightly before he pushed himself up on to his knees and with a big breath blew out his candles.
Everyone clapped and cheered as the adults took pictures of Harry with his cake and his parents.
“Who would like a slice?” Regulus asked the group of gathered friends and family, and every hand shot into the air.
Regulus carried the cake into the house and Harry followed at his heels.
“Can I cut it, please?” Harry asked sweetly.
“You can help.” Regulus told him with a wet smile.
