The Laws of Magick: The Law of Association

The Laws of Magick: The Law of Association: This is loosely based off of Issac Bonewits' Authentic Thaumaturgy. 

This law states that energy can only interact with another through a pathway of commonality. So people who think alike, who tend to function at a common energetic wavelength, tend to be drawn together. This is the idea that we are who we associate with. It is also very relative to the Law of Attraction. We attract things from what we project. This is one reason why raising our vibrational energy, especially when we are finally able to achieve true symbiosis with ourselves, our community, our species, our planet, and our Universe. We literally 'plug' ourselves into the great circuit of energy that is Universal energy. What do I mean by symbiosis? Whenever we engage with anything in our reality, we have a chance to create that reality and shape how everything else will react to us from that point forward. If we pollute, waste our resources, hurt each other, hurt our food sources, contaminate our water sources... we are choosing to have the whole world against us. We become a parasite, we become the enemy of all other life.

However, we can choose better! When we choose to recycle, to reuse instead of throwing things away, to clean up our roadsides, our rivers, our natural surroundings, we make ourselves an ally. We work with the flow of energy rather than against it. When we help one another, reach out and support each other... not only do we empower them, but also we empower ourselves. We increase our vibrational resonance and we harmonize with the flow of creative energy instead of destructive energy.

Yes, there is a place for destructive energy, and we too, have to embody that. But we can do that in a way that helps, rather than harms. All life must eat. And that means something must die in order for us to eat. That is also the cycle of energy. One being preys on another. The shaft of wheat bends its head to the scythe. The apple must fall from the tree. The salmon spawns and dies. What lives must die. And that can be beautiful. So when we eat, no matter what we eat, we need to stop and be thankful. One life dies to support another. But the apple doesn't fear it's decay for it knows that life lies within it. The wheat does not fear the coming of winter, it ripens, and its seed falls to the earth.

Not only do we need to be thankful, but we need to be knowledgeable about what we eat and use, and where these things come from. How were our clothes made? where does our food come from? Where does the fuel in our cars come from? Our electricity? And also where will it go...Who we allow into our space also matters. Who we give our energy to matters. Our time, our energy, our thoughts are all gifts, make sure you're giving them to someone who will not only benefit but will also help you grow.

Every time we work magick, we work with this law. For it is only by the commonality that links each person to one another, that we are able to affect everything and everyone. This is very similar to Chaos theory, where the actions of one person, affect all other beings. We are all connected and that is how we can work magick for others and have magick worked on us, for good or ill.

But when we sync with everything else, when we ally ourselves with something greater, then we have a tremendous amount of influence over what is allowed and not allowed in your reality. But only because we work for the greatest good of all!

The Laws of Magick: The Law of Contagion

This is loosely based off of the Universal Laws and off of Isaac Bonewits’  Authentic Thaumaturgy. This can be used for any path or tradition. 

This is a very interesting law. Basically, anything we come into contact with has energetic residue from everyone/everything else that it has come in contact with. But this can also apply to sex. Whenever we bond with someone, especially a deep connection like sex, we create a psychic connection to them. This can be why breakups are very hard on us on all levels. It’s also why even after a long time, we might still dream about that person. We are meant to share energy, to connect with other energy and merge it with ourselves. 

Sex is very sacred. It is life-giving. It is working on an instinctual level with the universal energy of creation. It is vital. I will never preach abstinence for that is not the way of energy. Not the way of creation. Our energy is meant to flow, it should never be constrained. Energy is comparable to fluid... Constrain it, and it stagnates... So don’t. Let your energy flow. Love is never something to be ashamed of. But we must be careful with our energy. It is a delicate and fragile thing, as much so as our hearts. 

Eroticism is the nature of all things. When we eat, when we drink, when we merge our energy with others. We do not have to fear that force within ourselves. Instead, it can empower us in all we do. Love of life, love of self, love of each other allows us to merge, to blend. To allow our energy to blend, that is the purity of energy. It was first the Universe, or perhaps the Gods that taught me how to live and breathe love. I was deep in trance, and from the darkness came.... a web... a circuit... a globe? All of these, and yet, none of these. I saw the pattern of energy as I had never seen it before, standing outside of it. And it was magnificent! I saw the shaft of wheat spring from the ground, grow, bear fruit,  I saw the shaft of wheat bend its head to the scythe, and I saw the grain fall back to the fertile earth. I saw that everything is connected. That we live as one on a giant organism. That everything we do effects this organism and every other life that is a part of it. I knew then, that life would never end. It will simply begin again in another form. 

It is the simplest thing, to love, yet it becomes the most complicated thing. We worry, we doubt, we fight... and yet all we have to do is be. Love is the nature of humanity, but we too often forget that role. So remind yourself of who you really are. Drop the masks, the facades, and simply be. Live and breathe love for yourself and the whole of the world, because we are all connected and we are all in need of love.

Lunar Oil Blends:

Feel free to experiment and share your blends!!! Always be careful when using oils on the body... Clove, cinnamon, etc can be very irritating, dilute well. When in doubt dilute well. Always perform a spot check when applying any oil/oil blends to the skin. Pick a small spot on the wrist and dab a bit on. Wait one day for a reaction.

Lunar Oil: Rose, sometimes I use rose water, which will make your mixture opaque. Jasmine, Sandalwood. This blend is prone to going rancid, to help this; make small batches, use vitamin e oil as a preservative, put in a dark bottle, and store in a cool, dark place. 

Lunar Oil 2: Cypress, Jasmine.  

Lunar Oil 3: Lotus, sandalwood, and hyacinth. 

Lunar Oil 4: Coconut oil and myrrh.

Lunar Oil 5: Sweet almond oil and honeysuckle.

The Laws of Magick: The Law of Cause and Effect.

The Laws of Magick: The Law of Cause and Effect.

This is partially based off of Issac Bonewits’ Authentic Thaumaturgy. This can be applied to any path.

This Law the underlying concept behind experimentation in Science. The idea that if one repeats a procedure exactly, one will get the same results. This is also how we know smudging works, how we know certain herbs heal while others harm, and how we know that certain methods in ritual are the best for raising certain energy.

However, there are always variables to be accounted for. When J and I sit down to write a new recipe, a new spell, a new ritual.... we always have to account for variables. I will give you an example of how I think about these things.

I want to do a spell for justice. The first variable I encounter is the question of whether or not I am actually being just. Am I being vindictive? Am I seeking revenge? Were my actions and words that got me into this mess just? If I have done something unjust, then calling upon the force of justice will work against me every time. But if I am just and have worked with justice, then the magick will flow as planned. The second variable I come to is what are my subject’s defenses? Are they strong, are they weak? Do I need to work around them? The third is anyone else potentially involved with the situation. How will they be affected? How do we protect those who are innocent? Like if you want to close someone’s shop and that is their only means of income, you have hurt the entire family, not just the shop owner. Fourth, you must always ask yourself if this is the right way to go about getting justice. It goes with number one. Is there another way? Is there a better way?

There are many variables in everything we do. If we call rain, we potentially harm people affected by a drought. If we call for wealth, we may end up inheriting more than we bargained for. So think wisely and deeply about all that you do. Work with honor and respect for yourself and others, and work with justice as much as possible.

The Laws of Magick: The Law of Correspondences

As above, so below; as below, so above. What is true on the macrocosm is true on the microcosm. Because energy reflects and reflects back unto itself. We can extrapolate knowledge and wisdom from the known to the unknown. Its how we can connect with the Collective Conscious. How we know things without being told. Every particle of matter contains all others. As then, so now, and will forever be. Its how we can use crystals, minerals, plants, etc to do specific things because they reflect that part of the energetic macrocosm. And how we can connect with them to heal or ground. We tap into the interconnectedness of energy. They resonate with its force. We too are a part of that force and the energy is reflected upon us as we reflect it back. It is the cause and effect of magick and our will. What we think and will is projected out and the collective energy projects it back.

Black Walnut Baths:

Black Walnut Baths: Black walnut baths are great for cleansing away any ties you no longer want. I especially like doing this under a new moon or on a lunar eclipse! And especially when combined with obsidian! Obsidian is great for cutting away any ties that no longer serve you. There are many ways to do this and I'll give you my favorites way and some examples on how you can enhance this practice!!

First, make sure what your cutting away will no longer be in your life. Old lovers, jobs, trauma, etc can really weigh you down, but if you invite these things back into your life, or create situations in which they may arise, then your not ready to do this work. Be willing to let go.

When do you your bath/s, do some work with the subject of the tie you are trying to cut. If its an old lover; discard any letters, photographs, anything that could hold their presence to you physically, psychically, mentally, etc. Then do some mental/emotional work. Write them a goodbye letter. Find your closure and release.

You can use black walnuts in the hull, black walnut hull powder, or black walnut leaves. I've used all of these and while I prefer the leaves, all of these work well. You can use purified water for the bath if you would like, but I prefer to have river water and I'll tell you why in a minute. A way of enhancing this water is with salt, new moon water, lunar eclipse water, or even make a gem elixir with obsidian. You can also add other herbs like yarrow, rosemary, mint, or any other exorcising herb. I prefer to do this as the final bath to a Nine Day Bath Ceremony, so I don't find it necessary to add any other herbs. Boil these herbs or the black walnuts. If you use them in the shell then try and use 12-13.

I prefer to do my bath outdoors, so I will bottle mine up for transport, but you can just as easily do this in the comfort of your own home. Just make sure to cleanse your bathroom really well afterward. Because I do mine outdoors, I find a spot by a river. I will usually use a swimsuit for this, but you can go skyclad if the area permits. I like to use the water from the river that I will be bathing in so that everything will flow away from me in the current.

Before the ritual, I make sure to make an offering to the river. Something meaningful! It could be the ashes of the letter you wrote. It could be an old crystal, flowers, blood, etc. I also make sure to spend some time with the river and around the area that I will be bathing. Cleaning it, talking to it, singing, meditating, planting plants or trees, etc. Let the area tell you what it needs and what you can offer it in return.

I take a piece of obsidian and call out to the power of the new moon, asking that all the ties that no longer serve my highest growth be washed away. I then use the obsidian to cut away any ties along my aura. Then I knock the obsidian piece on the ground three times to neutralize any residual energy. You can also bathe the stone in the river to cleanse anything away.

I smudge myself with sage, asking that any ties be burned away and blow away from me so they can no longer hurt me. I will also deeply ground myself, and ask the earth to take any energy and cleanse it so that it may be of better use.

Then I step into the water. I have my jar of bath ready and I ask the river to take anything that no longer serves me. I will pour the bath over my head and then, when possible, I completely submerge my body in the river. Then I walk back to the bank, collect my things, and leave without turning around. Do not look back. Those things have been left at that spot on the river. I will then not return to that place for at least three months after the bath is completed.

The last thing I do is keep a close watch on my dreams and record everything. I find dreams after a black walnut bath can be very intense, but they will show you the next area of your life that needs work and healing.

I have never done a nine-day Black Walnut bath. I would advise against it unless you are in a very dire situation. Black walnut baths are POTENT! If you decide to use this, make sure you only do it once or twice within the nine days. Otherwise maybe once every three months if you are actively working on healing and shadow work.

The Laws of Magick: The Law of Knowledge: This is roughly based on Isaac Bonewits' Authentic Thaumaturgy. But can be applied to all paths.

The Law of Knowledge is perhaps one of the most important concepts in all energy work. The Oracle of Delphi said it best; Know Thyself. What does it mean to know oneself? Do we ever really know ourselves? People are dynamic, constantly changing, and yet at the core we are who we are.

Knowing yourself is about knowing, not just your strengths, but your weakness' as well, and above all your place in the universe. We see every day self-centered actions, we see the destruction of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat. We are constantly surrounded by the death of other species as well as the death of our own.

In Shamanism, we strive to have a 'enlightened' perspective of our earth. This does not come from looking without, but by looking within. When we delve into our person-hood, we discover that we are connected to all things. To have an expanded vision of all things and how they interrelate. Everything we eat becomes a part of us, physically and energetically. Ever life we interact with, touches every other life. Many people feel disenfranchised, they feel like nothing they do matters! It does! Every action we take, word we speak/write, the energy we project to the universe matters. And collectively, we can change this world.

Let me give you an example. When people go out to the woods, look out into the vast ocean, look into the night sky, they tend to feel small. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. To me, that small feeling is completion. I know that I am just a small part of something that is so much greater than myself! I can relate to things on a grander scale. My perspective of the world is expanded, and suddenly my problems don't seem so important. I realize how hard it is to face the feeling of hopelessness when it comes to issues like Environmental Destruction, Pollution, Political Corruption, etc. But I want each and everyone of you to realize your power! We each are small cells in a great organism, in a great ecosystem, but one small cell can mean the difference between immunity(B cells, Killer T Cells) and cancer. The choice is always within our power!
