Weird Things That Have Happened in a NASCAR Race: Part II

Here we are, here are five more weird things that have happened during a NASCAR race. I swear, there are moments in this sport that are just completely out of left field. Before we start this, I would like to credit @ryanthedemiboy for suggesting 2 of these unusual moments.

First up, we have the 2012 Daytona 500. This race was already delayed an entire day due to bad weather and got delayed even longer during one of the cautions. While trying to catch back up to the rest of the field, something broke on Juan Pablo Montoya’s car, and he ended up losing control and crashing into a jet dryer. This ended up causing a massive explosion and an incredibly large fire. I would like to point out that this incident did not result in anyone getting injured, thank goodness. Montoya was not penalized for this incident with NASCAR deeming that he had no control over his racecar. The race was put under the red flag, which made it go even later into the night. Several memes were made after this incident. My personal favorite is an edit that was made to an Allstate commercial. Look it up on YouTube, it’s hilarious.

This next one has alcohol written all over it. Before the start of the 1986 Winston 500 at Talladega, the pace car began moving. It was not being driven by an official. Some dumbass actually snuck past security, got in the pace car, and took off. He actually went quite the distance, before being stopped by a road block in turn 4. This is unfortunately the reality that we are living in. When someone gets wasted and sees a vehicle, there is a 65% chance of them attempting to steal it.

This next one had me laughing my ass off when I saw it. There have been numerous instances of drivers getting angry with each other, and things got physical. But during a truck series race at Gateway in 2016, Spencer Gallagher and John Wes Townley crashed into each other, and what happened next did not look like a usual fist fight. It looks more like either a really bad dance routine, or an audition for professional wrestling. Seriously, what the hell even is this? This doesn’t even look like these guys are trying. And it took forever for the track safety workers to try and break them apart. I think the reason why is because they were enjoying the stupidity of what they were seeing, and didn’t want it to stop.

This next one happened during qualifying for the 2004 Busch series race at Chicagoland. Todd Szegedy was driving around the track, when all of sudden, there was giant orange rolling on the track. This orange was a balloon with the Tropicana logo on it. It was a very windy day, and what ever was holding the balloon wasn’t enough, and it broke loose. I wonder what was going through Todd Szegedy’s head when he saw that. It’s not every day that a giant orange starts following you.

Finally, we’ve got something funny that happened in 1986 at Richmond. This is something that Dale Earnhardt did, the freaking intimidator. They were under caution, and Earnhardt said that his windshield was dirty, and that he needed to pit. His crew chief told him no, and that they were going to lose a bunch of track position. So Earnhart decided to clean the windshield himself. He then leaned out of the car, and began wiping the windshield with his hand, while he was controlling the steering wheel with his knees. This is just Dale Earnhardt being Dale Earnhardt. He always had hilarious moments. Why NASCAR decided not to black flag him for this, I will never know.

When I'm in a vehicle and not driving, I look out the window. I see poles pass by n stuff and kinda clench the side of my face that they're on til they pass. I do the same with parts in the road that aren't just the normal lanes, like I do it with turn lanes and driveways, and intersections n stuff and where roads split off until there's the dirt/grass thing that separates them. I clench my jaw on that side and squint my eye slightly and I do it for both sides of my field of vision. After every bus ride or ride with my parents my face starts to hurt. I often find myself doing it subconsciously as well. It's gotten to the point where I can't read in the car anymore because I get so distracted. Am I the only one? Should I try and stop? If so, do you have any tips?
