its funny to me that grace spends like the entire book complaining about being an american scientist because he sometimes uses feet and its not useful in a science context because it doesnt scale well, only to mention astronomical units/au (the mean distance between earth and the sun during orbit) exactly once (1), which is comically unscalable, and never mentions it again

the thing about “equal machinery” in terms of the weird powerscaling thing motorsports fans love to do is its the most non-statement ever. there is no truly “equal machinery”. if youre comparing across a span of several years, the spec will change and familiarity will benefit one person or the other, the rules will change. how does “equal machinery” account for preference in riding style or oversteer/understeer? v4s or il4s? v6s, v8s, v10s? 2 stroke or 4 stroke? do you put everyone in something that is a middle ground so no one gains an advantage or do you give everyone something to their preference? thats not equal machinery! what fuel? what track? what year? who else is on the grid? and this is not even accounting for luck, circumstances, developments in performance conditioning. “who wins in equal machinery?” is literally just “who do you think is better?”, the “equal machinery” part is completely pointless as its a completely undefined factor. is the “equal machinery” the most perfect bike ever built or is it something we cobbled together with bent handlebars and no speedometer? is it a pedal bike?
