In an au I’m not currently writing where Shane and Ilya get together as soon as they hook up that first time and decide to publicly become friends, I want them to accidentally become common law partners.

Idk how it happens, maybe they decide to have Ilya move to Ottawa earlier on and he and Shane buy a house together “for the bromance” and actively live together when they’re not travelling.

But whatever, it happens cuz this is Canada. Gay marriage was legalized in 2005 in Canada and you could be common law partners and get your partner’s work benefits as early as 2003 in Ontario (common law meaning no ceremony but you’re legally recognized as a couple and have the benefits of a couple).

I want them to realize they’ve accidentally become common law when they file the immigration paperwork because I think it’s funny lol.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good “Ilya is jealous of other people realizing Shane’s hot” post, but hear me out.

I think Ilya likes it that others know Shane’s hot shit. He loves that other people know Shane is hot shit and that they’re together. That Shane chose him and loves him.

Ilya is a smug smug man all because he knows that he bagged the baddest baddie in the league. His man is the best hockey player, the hottest man in the NHL.

He loves that others salivate over Shane because yeah, how else are you supposed to react to the sight of Shane? How dare someone not want to sleep with Shane?

Someone not finding Shane attractive is incomprehensible to him. Like, he is the most gorgeous person alive. He would have been the reference for marble statues of the Ancient Greek gods.

He may have complicated feelings about god and religion, but heaven falling to hell, he will worship the man he loves, and after a decade of secrecy he is not hiding a single thing.
