WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE I DONT WANT TO GO BACK INTO THE CLOSET LINE!?!?
And if I said people don’t like how Shane acts in the long game (and react sometimes viscerally to it) because they know it’s in character for him to act that way? what would you say to that?
I go back and forth between the headcanon that Danny Fenton is a whopping 6’7” tank of a human being or a tiny 5’4” king who stopped growing after the portal.
My (Potentially) hot take:
I think that if the roles were reversed and Shane was bi and Ilya was gay, they still would have gotten together in the end.
You can’t control who you fall in love with, regardless of gender (Ilya talks about this with Shane in episode 6).
Sure, he maybe would have enjoyed the “mechanics” of having sex with rose, he might have loved her as a friend, but if he was already gone on Ilya, I think it would be like Ilya said, he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about him.
In an au I’m not currently writing where Shane and Ilya get together as soon as they hook up that first time and decide to publicly become friends, I want them to accidentally become common law partners.
Idk how it happens, maybe they decide to have Ilya move to Ottawa earlier on and he and Shane buy a house together “for the bromance” and actively live together when they’re not travelling.
But whatever, it happens cuz this is Canada. Gay marriage was legalized in 2005 in Canada and you could be common law partners and get your partner’s work benefits as early as 2003 in Ontario (common law meaning no ceremony but you’re legally recognized as a couple and have the benefits of a couple).
I want them to realize they’ve accidentally become common law when they file the immigration paperwork because I think it’s funny lol.
I’m gonna be honest. I understand where people are coming from wanting Shane to have been diagnosed with autism as a kid and knowing and understanding his autism, but realistically, he just wouldn’t have had that diagnosis.
Back in the 90s, the DSM (4) was different from the one used today (DSM 5) and the criteria for autism back then was a lot closer to what would be considered today as autism with high support needs. Which, objectively, Shane is not. I’m not saying he doesn’t have support needs at all, he’s rich so a lot of the daily supports he would potentially need are already taken care of for him, but he is by no means high support needs.
Even Asperger’s (which isn’t used anymore for a variety of reasons, including the Nazi it was named after) wouldn’t have likely been a diagnosis for him though he might have fit the criteria for it.
Realistically, a little boy of colour who likes sports who has relatively low support needs who is socially awkward but is also verbal is not going to be the one who gets viewed as autistic.
I also think, and this is more my personal subjective opinion than anything else, that Yuna and David probably didn’t really notice this as anything strange. Autism is hereditary and he likely inherited it from both of his parents (the Hollander goodbye and Yuna going straight into problem solving mode come to mind). This is how they live and how they are and there’s nothing strange about it to them. Especially since his special interest is sports (this is like the boy equivalent of a girl having a special interest in fashion) it’s a “normal” and “common” thing to focus on and be interested in. (I can go into the gendering side of this in a bit more depth later)
The other thing, is that even if Yuna and David were thinking that something was up, I just don’t think they’d get Shane assessed, let alone diagnosed.
Im about 10 years younger than Shane, and, even when I was younger a diagnosis like this was seen as an awful thing. Having a diagnosis was viewed as something wrong.
Even though multiple teachers and even my family doctor recommended to get me tested as a kid, my parents didn’t ever take me to get assessed because there was “nothing wrong with me”, I “struggled with making friends” and I just had a lot of “energy” and was really “passionate about mermaids”. It wasn’t malicious, but there is that negative connotation that was for a long time (and even still is today, in certain sectors).
Shane was “functioning” and objectively became successful so why give him an additional thing to think about? An additional thing to declare to the teams that sign him and need his medical information? Why make life harder for him, especially since he’s already disadvantaged socially by not being fully white.
That said, I do think that it’s possible for him to get diagnosed later on down the line. Especially with the Irina foundation, potentially if they chose to have a child with his sperm where they decide to get him assessed by recommendation from the school, etc…
I also think Ilya would be supportive of him no matter what.
At the end of the day, fic is fic, people can headcanon and write what they want (and I think that that is beautiful) but I just figured I wanted to share my POV lol.
Hollanov au where the ccm ad also shares stills where they’re clearly having fun and instead of being framed as rivals, they’re framed as unlikely friends.
And how they’re not so scared of being seen in public as a result and they start dating so much sooner 🥺
I know a lot of people headcannon Shane as a safe and prudent driver, but that man has driven in Montreal for most of his adult life.
To drive in Montreal, you have to be an asshole on the road. I’m talking last minute swerving, cutting people off, honking, changing lanes at the last minute, etc…
If you do not drive aggressively, you’re not getting anywhere.
The first time Ilya gets in a car driven by Shane when he’s not in the middle of nowhere (the Ottawa airport is basically in the middle of nowhere) he is shocked at how aggressive of a driver Shane is.
He thinks the shit mobile is because Shane is cautious? No. It’s cuz Shane knows the roads he drives and the people he shares it with. (Also the snow and salt rust the shit of our vehicles).
