when you're writing collaboratively do you spend more time in the planning/timeline portion of the process than when you write independently? how much stock do you put in your preplanning?
I’d say we probably spend more time writing independently, both when I write with @tartpants and in the past when I’ve written with @whilemybodyiswarm. Often there’s around 3-5 planning/recon sessions, one where we lay out the initial plans and get going, at least one informal one where one of us gets a new idea and we reroute, and then one or two to figure out how to end it, given how far we’ve come since the initial plan. Usually the ending takes some detail-hashing, since even though I usually like to plan with the ending in mind, some other things come up in the writing.
It’s fun having the other person write independently, though--- most of the time you come back and they’ve helped you both through a difficult part, esp when you’re writing contiguously like me and @whilemybodyiswarm, or @tartpants and I when we work on our original <3. Or the energy shift can be absolutely amazing, like when @tartpants and I trade back and forth.
I’m a big preplanner in general though, I like to know where things are headed :) it’s just the writing ends up being more of the work anyways, hehe.
