Now that we have Vol.3 of the Whitestone Chronicles comics, I wonder if they will make a comic about what Percy did in those years before meeting VM in that cell 🤔

Okay, after I said ‘not going to read the Ripley comic cos I hate TLOVM Ripley’ but then I read the comic anyway cos I like myself some Percy backstory content.

Some thoughts is that it’s good. Fairly fun read. And a better version of Ripley than TLOVM s3.

It’s ultimately a story about hubris, and Ripley. One large change to campaign canon is that Ripley and Percy have an explicit confrontation before he’s thrown in jail. She knows he’s alive, and doesn’t tell the Briarwoods.

Honestly, I always thought campaign canon — the implication that Percy attempted to shoot Ripley but was apprehended, but then Ripley doesn’t bother to check in with her guards who this was — was contrived. Perhaps there’s a detail I missed but I believe that is the story to be the case.

So here Ripley knows Percy is alive, and I can’t remember if this contradicts TLOVM s1 with how Percy and Ripley greet each other when she’s in the cell but I’ll assume it doesn’t for now.

I think it makes a little more sense that Ripley confronts Percy, then decides to not tell the Briarwoods. The comic sets up Ripley’s self importance and ego, her inflated belief that she’s going to be all right, and also her obsession with Percy is clear, so it makes sense that she keeps this Percy knowledge to herself. Her hubris is her downfall.

She takes Percy’s prototype and tries to make it better. And then when it matters, when she’s so confident she can defeat the Briarwood, it backfires and blows off her hand. She is smart but also deeply stupid and I enjoy that the comic engages with that. It actually felt satisfying!

Overall, a good way to explore a villain was in this comic, and better than the show’s attempts. It’s also just the campaign canon with a few tweaks

Some critiques:

— it honestly looks like young Percy is the one who confronts Ripley, which makes the timeline very, very fucking weird. Was he in the cell for years before he met Vox Machina? I don’t think so.

— I don’t like that Percy springs Cassandra and not Cassandra springing Percy. My girl trying to save them both, and Percy getting free and Cassandra nearly dying for it and staying trapped is deeply tragic. Too much Percy importance.

— I don’t love the art. It is a worse version of TLOVM art, which is simple but honestly beautiful in s3. The art here doesn’t look as good as the show, with many uninspired backgrounds.

Anyway Whitestone Chronicles: Cassandra next pls? I will take back all my critiques of TLOVM if they do this (not lying) (no fingers crossed behind my back)

“The Legend of Vox Machina” Show Gets Prequel Book Series

Critical Role, Dark Horse, and Amazon Studios have announced a prequel book series based on The Legend of Vox Machina animated series. The Legend of Vox Machina: Whitestone Chronicles will be a series of interconnected stories written by Marieke Nijkamp, in collaboration with the cast of Critical Role, with art by Tyler Walpole.

The Legend of Vox Machina: Whitestone Chronicles - Ripley is the first book of the series and will focus on Doctor Anna Ripley and her choices after the de Rolo family and Whitestone are taken over by the Briarwoods.

The Legend of Vox Machina: Whitestone Chronicles - Ripley will go on sale in 2024.

The Whitestone Chronicles — Cassandra

The next Critical Role comic has been announced!

Critically injured and seemingly abandoned by her brother after the murder of her family, Cassandra de Rolo finds herself at the mercy of Whitestone's usurpers. Much to her shock, Delilah and Sylas Briarwood treat her with the utmost care—almost like a daughter—as she recovers within the relative safety of her own childhood bedroom. On edge and suspicious of their motives, Cassandra adapts to survive while processing the trauma of her family’s demise and Percy's abandonment. The Briarwoods delight in parading Cassandra around the city in an attempt to convince the despairing populace of their benevolence. Instead of becoming their paragon of obedience, Cassandra unwittingly becomes the guiding light of the rebellion attempting to rescue Whitestone, particularly in the eyes of her childhood friend and rebel leader, Archie. Cassandra vows to do whatever she can to help her beloved home, but are the ghosts of her past powerful enough to overcome the ghosts in her present, or will the Briarwoods' brainwashing drown out all reason?

Scheduled to be released on March 10, 2026!

I love how they were clearly inspired by Campaign Trent's outfit for Vox Machina Comic Book Trent's casual jacket outfit (don't get me started on how HANDSOME he looks in that outfit)
