WHOLE30 : DAY ONE
START DATE: March 19, 2018
Second time around.
Started Whole30 on February 19th but had a trip planned to Pittsburgh during the entire 4th week. I knew I would FAIL during that week so chalked the first 3 weeks up to preparation for the real deal. I also had things that were not approved during the 3 week “trial” (and therefore technically should’ve started over anyway) but didn’t consider them major disruptions: Day 3 I ate a peanut butter RX Bar (I’d forgotten peanuts were legumes! And now I know the approved RX Bars are for emergency only (as well as the Larabars, more about that later)), around Day 8-ish I bought some Applegate brand peppered turkey breakfast sausage only to find out they contained sugar, less than 2g!, and I ate them anyway (Applegate does have some approved foods though), on Day 12 I drank - Vodka (Tito’s) and soda water. More than 3 I’m sure. Also finished off a jar of kimchi (not much) somewhere in the mix and it had sugar in the ingredients, but surely not much. Regardless of those unapproved items I was really proud of myself. Those items were better than if I’d had a cupcake, pizza, chocolate anything - ALL THE THINGS I REALLY WANTED.
Another thing I did a lot of the first round/trial, was eat (approved, minus mishap above) RX bars, Larabars and spoonfuls of almond butter to satisfy the sugar cravings. I’ve since learned that these are suppose to be for emergency only. I’m aware that one of the main goals of Whole30 is to get over the sugar cravings and eating those items only further prolongs the challenge and continues to fuel the cravings. But, I just couldn’t/can’t help myself! I did slack up on the bars during week 3 but then ended up doubling up on the nut butters because they are like a dessert to me. This continues to be my issue in Round 2. I will work on it but I also tell myself I’m still eating healthier than before and that’s a big step in the right direction.
And yet another unapproved item I forget about - GUM. I’ve been chewing the Orbit Sweet Mint gum all along until I read that it is a no no. I’d ordered a box from amazon just as I was starting this! Surely not much of the sugar substitute, or whatever it is, is getting in my system?! TWO (kinda) MAJOR THINGS TO NOTE: I started taking Wellbutrin AND quit smoking the day I started the (trial) Whole30 so there’s that. I think I’ll be just fine chewing gum vs. smoking (or eating junk).
In addition to that, cutting out alcohol (minus the 1 vodka night and a few drinks in Pittsburgh/4th week) - I’d say my body doesn’t know what the fu*k is going on. So. Many. Changes.
Let’s see how Round 2 goes!
Personal Notes for Documentation so I’ll remember:
I ate ALL the unapproved foods at once during my trip. Too busy to notice changes. However, the day before starting Round 2 I had a burger with everything, red wine and a dessert. Back to work Monday (3.19.18) and I was feeling irritable. Tuesday I felt irritable. Is it b/c of work or food? Hmmm. I’m still a bit cranky today but not as much. I also noticed my face started breaking out way more than usual (T-Zone area) Monday, Tuesday and today. It occurred to me that it could be because of food or drink! Duh! Of course I don’t know which food group is the culprit of anything since I indulged in all of them for 7 days. Looking forward to the discoveries during the reintroduction phase.
Yet another Note: I started my “trial” without the book, just random browsing online for the first week. I quickly realized I wanted something tangible to refer to/flip through/look at (tired of reading on phone) so I checked it out from the library and it has been so worth it. Highly recommend the book even though most everything you can find online here or there.
I really want pizza. I didn’t eat pizza on my trip. Why?!?!?!
No pizza! No Pizza! No Pizza! Nooooo.
