oooh! IF you feel like it, J and Amenadiel.
J. Making a speech/toast.
Lucifer doesn’t think he’s ever been so happy in his life.
It feels like a living thing, set to burst out from his chest, pushing against his ribs. The wedding had been small and personal, just how Chloe had wanted it, out on the beach where he’d first washed ashore where he’d wanted it. Their reception is a big bash at Lux, the bass thumping and the drinks flowing.
He and Chloe have already danced, first slow and sweet, then fast, sweating and giddy under the flashing lights; a space cleared out around them as they laughed and swung. Now they sit, taking a break at the VIP booth, watching their friends and coworkers enjoy the party.
The music abruptly cuts off with a terrible whine and a spotlight swivels to center stage where Amenadiel stands in front of a microphone. He smiles a little nervously. “Good evening, everyone! I trust you’re enjoying yourselves?”
Lucifer’s attention snaps to his brother. “What on earth is he doing?” he murmurs. Chloe, against his side, moves forward to get a better look.
The crowd yells in approval. Amenadiel seems to gain some confidence.
“Now I know this wasn’t a traditional ceremony, but I refuse to give up my right to make a speech,” Amenadiel says.
“Speech!” a voice shouts enthusiastically that sounds remarkably like Ella.
“Dear Dad, no,” Lucifer breathes. Chloe snorts and slips her arms around his.
“I’m told it’s traditional to start with a joke.” He shifts his cue cards nervously.
Lucifer groans and fights the urge to lay his head down on the table.
“But we all know Michael is the funny one, so why try?”
It goes over the heads of most everyone there, but a surprised laugh barks out of Lucifer, almost despite himself. Michael, the funny one? Now that was a good joke. Amenadiel grins, pleased.
“Chloe Decker and Lucifer Morningstar. Where do I start with Lucifer?” Amenadiel glances at the cards in his hands. “Well, for starters he’s handsome, witty, intelligent, he’s charm…sorry… I’m having trouble reading your handwriting. You can tell me the rest later.”
The audience chuckles along this time. Chloe slips her fingers through his, but his focus is on his brother.
“And Chloe, brave, beautiful, smart, selfless. My brother could not ask for a better partner, in love and in life. Your grace and your wisdom are beyond compare and you can be certain that Lucifer will never let your life be uninteresting.”
“Hell, yeah!” someone shouts and there’s a soft wave of laughter.
Amenadiel clears his throat. “Lucifer. My brother. Absolute devil. Some might say that you changed, that meeting Chloe helped you become a better man, but they’d be wrong.” He holds his brother’s gaze. “Because I think that man was there, underneath, all along, and we were just too blind to see it.” He smiles and his eyes are shiny when they catch the light.
Lucifer squeezes Chloe’s hand tighter. She squeezes back.
“And I’m so-” his voice cracks, but he continues on, resolute. “-So glad that I had the privilege of meeting that person. That you let me be apart of your life despite the past, despite the terrible things we’d done to each other. I am so happy for you Lucifer, that you found this miracle, this partner, this wonderful woman who loves you as much as you love her.” He raises his glass. “To the happy couple!”
His proclamation is followed by cheers.
