Stormlight Characters Writing College Application Essays

It's about that season, huh? If Stormlight characters had to apply to college, and if that application involved the dreaded College Application Essay, how would that go?

1. Adolin

Essay question: What is the biggest obstacle you have overcome?

Adolin (dictating to Jasnah): ...And that's why my breakup was the biggest obstacle I've ever overcome. But it taught me a lot. About life. About love. About how I will probably find a new and better girlfriend in college, which is exactly why you should admit me, Adolin Kholin. Adolin: Whew...I think that's that. What do you think? Jasnah: [Is completely ignoring Adolin's dictation in favor of writing a good essay about his work as a duelist] Jasnah: I think you're a shoo-in. Adolin: Woo-hoo!

2. Kaladin

Essay question: Imagine the following scenario: You know that, if you do something immoral, many people will be saved. If you take the so-called moral path, then yourself may remain unblemished, but a great many people will die. If faced with this choice, what would you do? Explain your answer.

Kaladin: ... Kaladin: This seems like a weird question, just to go to medical school in Kharbranth.

3. Shallan

Essay question: Describe a hardship that you overcame.

Shallan: Oh, easy. [Writing] Becoming the Ward of Jasnah Kholin. Shallan: Honestly, I bet even the title will be enough to get me in.

4. Szeth

Essay question: Tell us about a time that you had to question a deeply held belief.

Szeth: ... Szeth: ... Szeth: Maybe I don't want to study after all.

5. Lopen

Essay question: Describe a setback or failure and how you grew from it.

Lopen: Hmmm...can't really think of anything. Kaladin: How about being thrown into the bridge crews? Lopen: What? If not for that, I might not be Radiant now! Sigzil: You used to be missing an arm. Lopen: That made me REAL good at jokes, you know. Rock: You've lost many a drinking contest to me! Lopen: Can't say I really grew from that. Lopen: ... Lopen: Essays are hard when you're already perfect!

6. Lift

Essay question: Write an essay about whatever you'd like.

Lift: Ugh, it's too open-ended! Why'd you suggest this one?? Wyndle: Mistress, you have so many stories! What about writing about the time you pulled a Herald back from the brink of madness? About your role in saving Thaylen City? The story behind any of the oaths you've spoken? Lift: What if I make a list of the best swear words from every country? Wyndle: ... Lift: What? It shows I'm always traveling AND learning.

7. Wikim

Essay question: What is something that you are grateful for.

Wikim: Hmmm...well, I'm grateful that Shallan murdered dad, to be honest. Balat: [shaking his head] Wikim: I'm grateful that Shallan told us jokes when dad was being abusive? Balat: [shaking his head] Wikim: I'm grateful that Shallan was willing to rob even Jasnah Kholin to help our family? Balat: [shaking his head] Wikim: I'm....grateful that she gave me math problems when I was depressed that one time? Balat: [thumbs up] Wikim: Picking an essay topic is hard!

The Davar Household – Lin, Malise, Helaran, Balat, Jushu, Wikim and Shallan

Since there are some scenes from Shallan’s past in Word of Radiance we are back at the character design. Woohooo! They are the depressed Weasleys. I always had a hard time picturing Shallan’s brothers and keep them visually separated in my mind while reading. But not any longer. Capes apparently became a thing in Veden fashion, while I was sketching the clothes. Or have they always been...? ( I definitely got inspired by the already existing art on the Coppermind. ) It is interesting to get it to be distinct from Alethi and Thaylen trends, getting inspiration from both neighboring countries, but still doing its own thing.

Stormlight Characters! Shallan and Jasnah are dating! How do you react?

We’ve already imagined reactions to Shallan/Kaladin and Kaladin/Adolin. Let’s continue the series (?) by considering how people might react if Shallan started dating Jasnah!

Adolin: Is it odd for me to lose Shallan to the person who arranged my engagement to Shallan in the first place?

Adolin: Yes, a little!

Adolin: But, I mean, it’s Jasnah. Who can blame her, really?

Navani: That engagement was originally intended as a way to bind Shallan to the Kholin house.

Navani: Ah, Jasnah. Always deciding to just do things herself. 

Balat: And to think this all started because we sent you to steal that Soulcaster, Small One.

Wikim: Love is a strange thing!

Jushu (muttering): Especially in our family. 

Veil: I-I was kidding about only liking dumb women, of course! I am thrilled and not at all intimidated!

Radiant: As someone vaguely modeled after Jasnah, I feel very happy for Shallan!

Radiant: What was once but a splinter personality with slighter larger boobs is now Shallan’s reality! 

Dalinar: I remember when Shallan suggested that Jasnah be made queen.

Dalinar: And now Shallan is dating the queen.

Dalinar: I won’t dwell on it. 

Kabsal: Wow. So, I REALLY read that situation wrong!

Amaram: OHHHH... so THAT’S why Jasnah was never interested in me!

Amaram: I am so happy it was just that and no other reason!

Amaram: Why is everyone looking at me like that?!

Elhokar: Shallan was very brave during the mission to Kholinar, and she’s a Lightweaver just like I almost was!

Elhokar: I bet she’s WAY more trustworthy than my wife was! 

Ivory: Surprise is.

Ivory: Jasnah is logical. Shallan is...not.

Pattern: Mmmm...humans say opposites attract.

Pattern: But by that, they mean people with a notable differences in personalities and not things that are actually opposites at all!

Pattern: Mmm...delicious human lies...

Ivory: ...

Ivory: Jasnah’s partners...why must they always be Lightweavers?

Hoid: Of course, as an immortal, I am used to my relationships having expiration dates!

Hoid: So I am totally fine with Jasnah leaving me for Shallan!

Design: More depression noodles?

Hoid: YES PLEASE

I was thinking about Shallan and her brothers. Shallan who when Heleran told her to stay strong and look her for their other brothers and draw again and avoid thinking about what happened. Shallan who tried to keep their spirits up and make them laugh. Shallan who set up Balat with Eylita going into a bloodsport den at a fair to give him a letter of hers. How she gave Wikim the maths problems and he gave her the blackbane, which she didn't get rid off. How she improves all of Balat's escape plans. How she bailed out Jushu from being imprsioned for debt. How she killed both of their parents. How when the poison didn't do the job she strangled him. How the plan to steal and replace the soulcaster was hers. How she travelled across the wrold with all their hopes pinned on her and they stalled. How Mraize got them out of Jah Keved cos they were her brothers, how they have comfortable way of living because they're the highprincess's brothers. She saved them all and herself when surving horror. Balat even expresses guilt once for Shallan looks out for them and they not her, when they're her older brothers.
