college byler concept where will drops the byers last name and starts going by maldonado in his daily life. then after two gap years (and lackluster contact with will) mike enrolls into college and almost skips a beat when he reads "will" as his assigned roommate but thinks nothing more of it until will comes back to the dorm after school and sees mike wheeler drinking coffee on his kitchen counter.

Have I posted about how, though I love the idea of adult Will and Mike making comics together, that well known and respected artist Will can lead to Mike telling everyone he has Will Byers/Maldonado/Hopper/Wheeler (I’m partial to either Joyce’s maiden name Maldonado or Hopper myself) originals at his house and it’s just Will’s art from kindergarten and middle school and stuff. While at his house the people he invited to see Will’s art get to meet Mike’s partner/husband; Will.

my brain just EXPLODED with the ideia of instead of the Byers being the Byers they are actually the Maldonados, a latino american familly (will and jonathan being 4th gen latinos) and THAT is the reason why they are the freaks of the town, and Joyce, who didn't want her sons to go through the same experiences she had growing up, she never tought them spanish, but after everything they went through together Joyce makes her life mission to teach all her kids (yes Jane is included!) how to speak spanish!!

this is a very rough ideia but I love to headcannon characters as latinos!

i've seen someone on tumblr ( @starrycloak ) say that Will should take the last name "Maldonado" (Joyce's original last name) when he turns 18 and i agree, so Mike would be "Mike Maldonado" after Mike and Will get married which would be cute and would show how fond Mike is of his mother-in-law
