What are some distinctive aspects about the winkte as compared with other third genders you know of?
idk I'm not winkte (i think they're usually if not always amab but please if anyone is winkte or just knows better/more please let me know) nor am i an expert on other tribal gender customs. they are of course, automatically distinct because of the culture that they come from. the way the lakota view/ed gender and gender roles/norms are/is different from tribes on the other side of the continent for instance.
for the oglala lakota, i know at least, that the buffalo/bison/tatanka/pte was such a HUGE part of our culture and lifestyle that we even based gender roles off them.
“The bison was a model for Lakota life and social organization. Bison are seasonally migratory herd animals, basing their movements on supply and accessibility of forage, water, and other resources. Bison are gregarious, forming herds according to sex, age, season, foraging conditions, and habitat. Male and female bison, generally live and travel in small separate bands, congregating into large combined herds only during the summer mating season. Some refer to bison social organization as matriarchal.
Nomadic Lakotas based their seasonal migratory patterns on the bison; on the availability of forage for their horse herds; and on access to water, firewood, and other resources. In many ways the Lakota tiospaye lodge-group system was similar to the small-herd social organization of bison. The Sioux, like the bison, congregated into large bands or conglomerations of tiyospaye for their annual summer Sun Dance and communal hunts. Lakota people of the same generation remained divided along gender lines throughout much of the annual cycle, except for courting and reproductive purposes. The bison-hunting lifestyle and the distinction between male and female roles and responsibilities reinforced a gendered division of labor. Some Lakotas refer to their society as matriarchal.”
