Self Protection Jar

This is a throwback to an old spell that uses a lot of sharp items to create a protection jar. Using sharp objects like thumbtacks, pins or broken pieces of glass is a way to create a ‘psychic fence’ so to speak. That way anything negativity coming towards you will be pushed back or deflected by all the sharp objects surrounding your energy field. 

What you’ll need

1 clean and cleansed jar (see note on this post on how to cleanse your jar)

Sharp items (Thumbtacks, pins, opened safety pins, needles. If you’re going to use broke glass PLEASE BE CAREFUL)

Add in any protection herbs or crystals if you choose to but I usually skip this step. 

Something that binds you to the jar such as fingernail filings or a lock of hair. The original spell asked for drops of blood but that’s a whole different thing if you want to do that. I recommend just using hair because of the risk of infection by cutting yourself.

Cleansing your jar

It’s important to cleanse your jar first and foremost. You can use any jar (Hello salsa and sauce jars!) Clean them out super well. If you are stuck with a smelly jar that has retained a strong odor even after washing out thoroughly you can rinse the jar with vinegar or let it sit overnight. That will usually get rid of any smell. 

Once you have cleaned your jar, I simply cleanse it by using incense. Light your incense and let the smoke thoroughly fill up your jar before releasing it into the air.

What to do

Set up your spell with any provisions you would normally use. Light candles, incense, and have any crystals out that you feel connect you to your magic. Protect your space by imagining a white light in a circle around you encasing the jar and sharp objects inside. 

Place each object inside until your jar is at least ¼ to ½ of the way full. Last, add a lock of hair or item that you chose to bind this jar to you. 

Once everything is inside, close the jar. If you want to seal the jar with wax you can take a candle and drip wax on top of the jar or on the sides letting the wax drop down into the seal. 

Close your spell and release your circle. 

Take your jar and hide it in a dark place where no one will find it.

Spell Jar Alternatives

I’m not one to bury jars with spells, I prefer a more eco friendly option and like to use items that are natural or will break down.

I thought I’d share some of the items I use...

Conker Shells

Hollow or hollowed veg

Fruit skins eg citrus fruit

Toilet Roll Tubes

Sea Shells

Snail Shells

Nut shells (walnuts are great!)

Seed Heads/Pods

Large leaves (I use fig)

Natural fabric scraps (silk rots quickly)

All of these are safer in my mind as glass carries a risk factor especially for my hole digging son.

Items can be sealed with soy wax or twine/ribbon such as hessian, cotton or silk which will break down far easier than synthetics.

Sigils still can be painted or drawn on many of the cases.

If I know I’m going to bury a spell I like to try and incorporate flower or herb seeds (Nigella/Blessing seeds are a favourite) as when the casing breaks down the seeds will often germinate.

Make a wish spell jar:

For beginners: I cannot tell you how to practice witchcraft. These are only suggestions. All ingredients can be substituted, as long as you have intent.

Ingredients/Intent-

Yellow spell candle.

Small jar with a cork.

Funnel or piece of paper you can use as a funnel.

Mortar and Pestle.

Dogwood Bark: for wishes and protection.

Carnelian: to stimulate creativity and motivation.

Quartz: to amplify your intent.

Citrine: to attract abundance and for courage.

Sunflower: for wishing and strength.

Violet: for wishing and to stimulate creativity.

Dandelion: for your wish.

Twine and charm (optional)

After cleansing and preparing your space, ingredients and utensils, (or whatever your ritual may be for spellwork) Light your candle.

*Dont forget to cleanse the jar*

Layer each ingredient into the jar using your funnel and focus on the intent of each and every ingredient entering the jar. You may need to crush some of the herbs to get them small enough. Top it off with a couple seed heads from a dandelion and cork it.

I personally always chant a spell when making witch jars and say it while sealing the top with candle wax. Here is my wish jar chant:

“May the Goddess and God of light and love, grant me my wish and quiet my heart. I place my desire in your hands, for you to do as you will and as I desire. May harm come to none nor return unto me. I wish....... (enter your wish here and visualize it coming true) So Mote it Be.”

Seal the top with wax & wrap the twine and charm around it. Carry it with you until your wish comes true. Once your wish has come true, you can continue to keep the jar with you or bury your jar keeping all the ingredients intact. If your wish does not have the outcome you’d hoped for or you want to break the spell, empty the ingredients into running water (stream, creek, etc...) or burn them.
