*Post of mine from "elsewhere" circa 2021
I was trying to trace the origin of "video games placing ninja into D&D style high-fantasy settings" thinking that there must have been an instance before the obvious answer of the first Wizardry in 1981. Seems that, yes, Wizardry was the first to do it... just like so many other genre conventions it pioneered. So, even though you create your own party, and Ninja is a promotion from your starter class, CANONICALLY the triumphant party make up included the ninja HAWKWIND.
So, the first and greatest video game D&D fantasy style setting ninja character responsible for all who followed was fucking named after the band HAWKWIND ( Hawkwind begat solo Lemmy who begat Motorhead ~ Motorhead arguably being the best Hawkwind song )
What's more, Lord Hawkwind returns as THE FINAL OBSTACLE in Wizardry IV (You play as the evil wizard Werdna resurrected)
There was an anime Wizardry ova if you want to see our boy in action. You'll find it easy as hell on youtube

Since they literally just released the remake of the first Wizardy game, I'm giving it a try. This game is a trip.
