Time to do a mammoth run of gentle washing, drying and checking for moth holes in this set of handspun that has been lingering in my neighbour’s mother’s attic for probably more years than is wise. (I had to put approximately the same again straight in the compost because it was badly damaged/super tangled 😱

Sadly more damage than I hoped. Skeins don’t age well/are easier for the dreaded moth to decimate.

Will see what we can salvage of this. If I can get 10-15m with less than 5 joins out of any of these I’ll keep them as mini skiens, otherwise they’ll join the giant pile of lengths that I’ll use to make a cushion cover or something using crochet similarly to the End Of The Yarn rug for the neighbour.

I’ll leave the ecru for another day….

Spinners take note: use your handspun yarns, do not leave them to languish like this!

Tale as old as time; you start with one hole and you think, oh yeah, I can darn that, no problem.

But beware! Hidden dangers! There may be more!

Curse the dreaded moth!!!

Complete ran out of steam. I know there are more, or at least there are a lot of vulnerable threads in this 40+ year old wool beret that was my mum’s before it was mine, but I might just have to reinvest in some felting needles and felt all the other bits because there’s only so much a girl can take.

Here's a fun tip.

If you're trying to remove insects like say wool moth or carpet beetle (or in my case, head lice) from woolen garments or objects that you would usually hand wash and dry flat, that washing routine isn't going to cut it.

But you can take your completely dry wool items and stick them in a hot tumble dryer for 30 minutes or more and kill adult insects, larvae, and eggs. As long as your stuff is completely dry when it goes in it won't felt or shrink.

If your clothing has already been chewed, you should repair any holes first so that the tumbling doesn't cause (more) unraveling.
