you may have answered this before, but who would volunteer for this? everett seems like an unusual case whatwith actually being given money. how would he even know he could earn money for his family when he first signed up? im fascinated by the worldbuilding of volunteers, id love to hear more about it in general
Ehehehe very fun question!!!
So I’ll start with Everett. His case isn’t actually that unusual in this setting. Some owners think they’re morally better than others for choosing to pay a fighter rather than purchase them as a slave. Ignore how this practice typically preys on vulnerable and desperate people. It’s totally morally good. Totally. In a lot of cases payment is based on fights won. Every time Everett won a fight, he received a good amount of the payout that he used to support his family. I never really settled on how he and his owner met, but his owner offered him the “job” and he decided it was worth the risk. The details were explained to him pretty simply, if he fought, and he won, there would be money involved. He couldn’t turn it down.
Other volunteers however. “Volunteer” as a name is somewhat misleading but it’s what they use to label anyone who wasn’t kidnapped for a specific purpose (Like Zander was). Those who volunteer rarely know the full extent of what they’re signing up for, and they employ people whose specific role is to find vulnerable people who could be pushed into volunteering, with promises of housing, financial support that likely won’t come, support for their families in exchange for their lives. Rarely do these situations work on in the person’s favor. Most volunteers are lied to and coerced into signing up for this. Others are essentially sold into it by people who are tipped off. Lea is an example of someone who was considered a volunteer, but never actually agreed to any of this. Their partner sold them to the training facility and received a payout for it.
None of this of course is. Actually legal. There aren’t laws allowing this, but it’s more like the law is willfully looking away from it to allow it to continue. The term “volunteer” is used more to downplay the severity of the situation and to wield against those who complain than anything else.
