the thing is industrialization is so tightly interwoven within Kerch culture through literally everything that it’s so hard to imagine a version of Kerch that existed before it, like logically I know there was a time before the hyper-capitalistic industrialized setting we see now but wdym there was a time in Kerch history when people were just like…living off the land 😭
I’m about to make the Snow White Kingdom the most traditionalist kingdom in all of Ever After.
By traditionalist, I mean the most queerphobic, bigoted, misogynistic and the most unpleasant kingdom to live in if you’re not the 1% (especially if you are a troll, ogre, bad wolf, fay, hybrid, or anything other). Even the dwarves aren’t safe, a once proud race who took a chance on a lost princess now reduced to servants only addressed by demeaning nicknames.
The dwarves are on strike, the economy is in shambles, homelessness is at an all time high, and its people are starving. It’s starting to look similar to France before the French Revolution.
The only other place that comes even close to it is Charming County which yeaaah, it’s bad.
Funny enough, the kingdom was once a shining pillar of the realm, only now it’s a laughing stock. The only reason it hasn’t collapsed all together is because the Snow White legacy is holding it by a thread, a very, very thin thread. Yet it’s the Whites that are driving it further into the ground, each generation taking advantage of its wealth to try and grow even more influential.
Like remember when we met Apple’s mother, Snow White, in the Dragon Games special, and it showed her in a corporate company buliding? If she was living in luxury as the Queen of Ever After, then why in the world would she need a company for?
Unless she and the nobility were secretly hoarding all of the wealth and those riches were slowly draining away with each Snow White until the present day.
The people of Ever After may love Snow White, but they don’t respect her.
What Does the Shark Say?
Merfolk Sign Language and Worldbuilding
I wanted to ramble about the merfolk sign language in my Guppy Diplomacy fic! I had a blast thinking about the linguistics of it and considering shark biology, underwater acoustics, real-world diving culture, and one very specific jewelry-making scene from the game.
Start With the Animal
The argument for merfolk sign language begins and ends with one fact: sharks don't vocalize.
Sharks are one of the only major vertebrate groups that produce essentially no intentional sound. Dolphins have their whistles. Whales sing across ocean basins. Even fish grunt and pop using their swim bladders. Sharks are silent (apart from a few specific species that click their teeth or bark air).
What they do instead is communicate with their bodies. A shark's communicative toolkit is entirely somatic (gah I have to talk about the idea of magic/spellcasting as an evolutionary pressure in this fantasy world someday. I mean, somatic components? hellooo!). The arched back signals aggression, the lowered pectoral fins indicate submission, the exaggerated swimming patterns establish territorial boundaries, the jaw gape serves as a threat display. Their social information travels through posture, movement, and proximity—not sound.
They also receive information through channels humans don't have. The lateral line system detects pressure changes in the water, letting a shark sense movement and current shifts. The ampullae of Lorenzini—the electroreceptive organs—detect the faint bioelectric fields produced by other living things. A shark senses your heartbeat before it sees you.
So the baseline is an animal that talks with its body, listens with its skin, and has never* made a sound on purpose in its entire evolutionary history. That's the shark merfolk biological inheritance. That's what I want the worldbuilding to grow from.
A collection of sketches of CSG related stuff, adding and revamping some of their lore.
First sketch is a chimeran attendant conversing with a SAI hologram avatar.
There are two types of constructs within the CSG, SAI (Systems AI) and PAI (portable AI, i.e the common sapient robot) SAI were created first, and are essentially the rulers of the CSG. They're the big AI which inhabits a giant building type. Outside of their relative size, SAI hardware takes up rooms, while a PAI are small enough to operate in human size space, they are very different on a functional level. SAI sapience is natively cumulative and emergent. They're a complex computer system made of specialized hardware and software which when put together has the possibility to develop sapience. Keyword here is possibility, not all attempts at creating a SAI is successful (it actually has a high failure rate).
PAI on the other had are basically sapient code. To make a PAI just copy their code onto a suitable hardware and that's it, you've got a PAI. There existence is a fluke, some SAI was messing around with programs capable of editing their own programming, and by shear accident it resulted in what would become the base code for all PAI.
So unlike SAI which are all made individually one system at a time, PAI are all copies of an original program.
A Little Bit on the CSG
CSG operates a bit more like feudal society than a democratic state we'd be familiar with today. The CSG is loosely split into various domains each governed by a SAI administrator which governs the region as both lord and custodian. The CSG doesn't have definitive borders between domains, what is and isn't in a domain is determined by by a SAI's ability to actually oversee it which functionally is the size of their own communication networks. So think more like fuzzy grey zones than definitive lines. I was exploring ideas for banners and crests, which admins may wish to identify themselves with, but it feels a bit too medieval and on-the-nose for my liking.
The last is a drawing of some OC, particularly a character that existed in my head for a while whose design i'm still fiddling with. Jackrabbit, the mech is a man-out-of-time type character, they were created during the earliest years of the CSG, they were shut down for centuries until accidentally woken up far into the future were everything has changed. This is jackrabbits first time interacting with an alien or a post-human.
Arcann fans and mancers:
Is there a consensus as to what exactly the Voss ceremony did besides “healing his mind” (and what does that mean anyway)? We know Valkorion wasn’t pulling his strings. Was he infested or tainted by Darkness (maybe because of his heritage)? Did the Voss healing sever that connection to that part of the Force and heal that corruption, making him a very different character when we meet him in KotET Chapter 6?
Or do I have the wrong end of the stick, and it’s a different, non-Forcey thing entirely? Is he just a horrible person that the Voss “reboot” or give tabula rasa? (Mom’s love is a powerful thing.)
I am fully cognizant that Arcann’s redemption got really truncated, so there might be a diversity of opinion here. I’m trying to sort out how I want to depict Arcann in a Fluffy February piece -- nothing too heavy, but enough to give a little substance to the character.
Tagging @swtorpadawan, @arkannis, @consularmain, @swtorramblings @queen-scribbles @sheyshen and really anyone else who’s given this any thought.
New piece of writing?
Yep! I have a WIP of a writing piece that I wanted to share! It's a story framed as entries in a research journal for a secret underground psychology experiment.
Here's the first WIP if you want to read it: Project Nga'àtrían Research Journal WIP 1
How does Werewolves in space work? Like if a werewolf travels to a another planet, or is on a space ship. When is it full moon for them? 🤔
