Round 1:
Which COVER do you like better?
Only God Was Above Us (Vampire Weekend)
Where's My Utopia? (Yard Act)
Remember you're voting for the cover artwork NOT the musical content or artist!
white, brunette, lanky, northern men who do political, highly sardonic music with witty spoken word and have a prolific bassist to back them up
the father
the son
the holy spirit
interesting that the north keeps producing this specific type of guy, not mad about it at all
You guys should tune in to my radio show tomorrow evening because I'm gonna have some cool exclusives for you. Playing some cuts from BBC's 6 Music Festival last week, lots of bands including Bloc Party and Yard Act played many new songs in their sets. They also sounded great. If you live in the UK/have methods, you can watch all these sets on the BBC iPlayer or listen to them on the radio catchup BBC Sounds, or if you're not keen on sourcing all that yourself and live elsewhere, I've got a few new songs for you on air tomorrow.
I've also got a new band from Toronto called Mad Iris that we recorded a live set for. They're quite shoegaze and noisy, but they're almost dreampop songwriters, and that combination is pretty interesting— you may have seen the kind of bedroom-metal blend before, but theirs is quite different and sounds a lot less bedroom and more like if you had someone with a kind of angel voice fronting a screamo band. It's great. They also have 3 guitarists, all doing something different, which makes for a very interesting sound. They've got their debut album coming out end of May, so it was a great time to get ahold of them for a quick chat— and yup, we've got an interview for you as well!
I can't deny, huge week in music. Last weekend say the release of very anticipated albums by RAYE, Robyn, Slayyyter (how many y's?) and more. Genuinely gonna be pop girl summer (I mean have you LOOKED at the Lollapalooza Chicago lineup for this year??)
(Look at the headliners - is that pop girl summer or what?)
So I've got some of those releases for you - new albums on the cards for Paul McCartney as well - an album dealing heavily in nostalgia and looking back (references to black and white photos, cheap guitars, secrets and promises made back on Forthlin Road... yeah. This album's the Beatles Retrospective. Paul has also said recently that he couldn't help but look back when writing this time. I'm sure his photogallery from 1963-64, which is currently showing at art galleries around the world, must've jogged Paul's memory and pushed him towards writing about memories).
And the new Muse album was announced. They're going on tour with Bloc Party in North America for the first part, Portugal the Man in the second.
They've toured with Portugal before iirc, and Bloc Party, well. Scroll up. They also played some new songs that sound very exciting, some throwing back to the straight-up guitar indie rock of their first album Silent Alarm from 2005, some with more complex loops and layering of guitars, giving it a more experimental feel. Classic Kele Okereke!
They also said they're going to have a new album out this year, though a date or title haven't been announced yet. Same goes for Yard Act, though based on what I've seen, I have my guesses for what the album might be called. I'll talk about it on the show tomorrow.
The new Bloc Party tunes - named Pigwig, Love Bombed, Only He Can Heal Me. They're about love, they're political. You'll feel it, they're quite signature Kele, again.
So that's the general vibe! 1.5 hours of music and chat about music. Tune in tomorrow night, Sunday 8 PM EST.
Close enough, welcome back Mr. Cocker!
Round 1:
Which band name do you like best?
Yard Act
My Chemical Romance
Note that this is about band names not their music or members.
My future home (it's a fixer upper)
Okay, so this is the most niche thing ever, but my friend @caywall is big into this band named Yardact (I also enjoy quite a bit of their songs), and he was curious about any potential connection between them and Chonny. So now this exists in the world. The two other fans of both Chonny and Yardact are freaking out right now.
