Finished the Yawara anime series today.

It was interesting watching a Naoki Urasawa series that is much more light-hearted in nature than many of his other works, but I liked it overall. It's a nice change of pace from Monster and Pluto (which are both excellent series).

The series has it's issues (feels a bit dated at times in it's storytelling and character archetypes, some occasional animation issues), but I think the overall quality of the series in it's character interactions, overall excellent animation (RIP Kitty Films, you made some beautiful-looking animation), excellent voice acting, and soundtrack selection (especially near the end of the TV anime) makes the TV anime a fun watch.

The two movies are alright, with the second one (taking place during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics) being a bit better and finishing the TV anime version of Yawara on a high note.

Yawara won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if light-hearted comedic late 1980s/early 1990s anime are your jam, you might consider watching it.

Sigyn by Yawarra

At the Made in Asia convention a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure to meet Yawara, a wonderful artist who LOVED foxes :3 Since Sigyn's animal IS the fox, I had to commission her of course :D

my panel partner and i are making edits to the sports anime panel and it has me thinking about yawara again. god, what a rivalship that show gave me. i still need to watch so much more of it but. literally this is the title card of the episode where her homoerotic rival is introduced

and her introduction is then canonically the reason yawara--who doesn't want to pursue judo despite her skill, wanting to just give up and be a Normal Girl with a Normal Boyfriend--decides to seriously commit to judo

and the rival is just soooooo. like. she's too good at every sport she tries so she harangues her driver about how bored she is due to not having a rival, distracting him into almost hitting yawara and her grandpa. after which she eventually discovers that yawara is super strong and good at judo, at which point she becomes obsessed with her and decides she's her rival and also. starts doing judo, which she's never done before.

and then she says things like this
