My New Home
Do you like virtual tours? I do! And today I want to invite you on a tour around Powell, a small town lost somewhere in Wyoming (Wyoming? What is Wyoming? Is it in the USA?..)
Let's start!
Powell is the best representation of “one-storeyed America”. Its population is about 5500, but sometimes it seems to me that there are more cars than people. And this is the place where I'm going to spend this year.
“A ghost town”, — said my host mother's sister who came to visit us from Oregon. You are probably waiting for me to disprove this outrrrrrageous claim? Well, in fact Powell… is a true ghost town. I know that, because one day I decided to explore it. I took my backpack, a water bottle and started my way (only Wyoming residents understand why one needs to take a water bottle. The Russians just shrug shoulders)
I was walking for two hours. I didn't stop in a cafe or a store, I just went and went forward, eager to see, listen and feel Powell. There is what I found out about the town:
🚶- in two hours I met only two men and a woman, but she was going to her car, so I won't count her. Oh, and me! Wow, three pedestrians in two hours – that's what I call “low density”.
⛪ - Powell has more than five churches and three libraries. By comparison, if Powell was in Russia, there would be one church and hardly any library.
🌳 - There is an arboretum! Its size is not more than two blocks, and I'd never guess it was something more than a dozen trees and a bench, but I must say I was glad to find it. It's so sweet that even Powell has an arboretum, and its size doesn't matter. I'm just happy to know I'm not the only eco-freak here :)
🖌 - There is even a graffiti wall. I'm impressed.
🏠 - All the houses are different. It's so sweet that each owner can customize his or her house so that it could match their tastes. Some houses are smaller, some – bigger, some are lost in flowers and cute garden figures, some show true loyalty with large American flags. Green houses, yellow, brown with white doors and blue with huge round windows like on a ship – why not? It's America, full freedom of self-expression.
👨👩👧 - People. As I already mentioned, that time there was almost nobody on the streets. But during my next walk in Powell I saw several people near their houses. They were playing with their dogs, or chatting, or cutting the grass. What I found interesting was that they didn't ignore me, but waved hands or smiled. Some even said “hi”! Unfortunately, in Russia we are way less friendly.
