When people think about yoga, one of the first things they say is, "That's for flexible people. I'm not flexible, so I can't do it." They look at everyone in class or on social media, self-conscious for not being able to hit a "picture perfect pose." Yoga is not about being flexible, but gives you tools to find space in your body and life. It is about connecting to your inner teacher, voice, and energy. I was a dancer for several years and realized I had motion in my hips, but not my shoulders and wrists. No body is "perfect," every one has strengths and weaknesses, which are beautiful. It took time, lots of learning to move from my core, my center of energy, to be comfortable here. Now it is my go to pose for stress and anxiety, or just when I need a fresh perspective. All things take practice, negotiating space, and most importantly, mindfulness. Rather than saying you cannot, what if you decide to proudly find a way to shift that works for you? My yoga view today. After a tough week where I’m not completely myself yet, being in nature at one of my favorite classes of the week is heavenly. Feeling the itchy grass on my skin, the breeze in my hair and the sun on my body was so therapeutic. Being able to connect with a yoga sister and practice together when I sometimes felt like crying was better than therapy. Dialectical behavior therapy teaches us that nature, exercise and connection are essential for our brains. Temperature changes helps shift our brain chemistry. Yoga Break! Self-care! This was a few days ago, but I did this pose again today, without a photographer. Supported Supta Baddha Konasana is a hugely healing restorative pose. It brings lots of blood flow to the power center of the pelvis. Great for reproductive issues like pms, infertility, peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause, great for prostate health for men. I love open ing my heart and having the comfort, steadying weight of a few blankets on top of me. Pressure on the front of the body stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping soothe and balance out the fight or flight response. It’s really the perfect healing pose. You can do it with or without the bolster. This variation is a bit different than I teach it. Try it with the bolster or folded blankets supporting your whole spine. Or try a block under your bolster to elevate your head a bit. Close your eyes. Breathe.
