Well I got it from an interview with Charlie from like.. when the show first came out (and it was just an audio interview cause he was working on stuff). Don’t remember, but it might also be written in the pilot script, under Jon’s description.

I like the one year gap to be honest. And just because Nancy and Steve are still together after a year doesn't mean anything. I've been in relationships for longer that didn't work out. People grow up and apart, unfortunately it's part of life. It can go either way. I think a year going by is smart. The writers said that if something were to happen with Jonathan and Nancy it would take time because Jonathan "is a complicated guy" and he would need to do a little more growing before having a healthy relationship with a girl. 

I think they have bigger fish to fry right now. Will is basically a host for alien lifeforms for all we know and Eleven is still missing. Those will be addressed on the forefront. If Jancy happens it'll be in the background in the grand sceme of things, like all the love interests this season. They spent a great deal of the first season showing us a wonderful growing bond between the two so I doubt they would just scrap it and have her live happily ever after with Steve. These are good writers, they are going to tie up loose ends. They are going to have to address what I believe is foreshadowing, between the two. For example, the police woman saying "only love makes you that damn stupid." Or that unfinished thought Jonathan had before they were interrupted, "Nancy..." We have a lot to look forward to in general. Keep your Jancy hopes high! @youffievalentine

what is interesting as well is how matt is talking about Jonathan as an alter-ego. "i never got a girl. it didnt happen... it would be a fantasy". so i think that the bros care about Jonathan a lot. but will they give him a girlfriend 'yet' if he supposed to represent them? idk...

i would understand if they feel like they have a personal connection to the character, because i feel the same way about jonathan. but before i saw that text post made by @nance-byers, i never considered the fact that nancy is actually the nerd in this scenario, jonathan is not. he is the socially awkward loner.

in my personal opinion, after the right amount of personal growth and friendship, nancy and jonathan would be very good together.

so, it is confirmed than Jonathan is still a virgin? my headcanon was right then.

To be honest I kind of figured, given his age and situation. The very first episode we see him cooking breakfast for his mom and he seems frazzled when she asks him why he didn’t wake his brother up yet for school - to which he replies he picked up a shift at work because they needed the extra money. He has a lot going on for a what, 17 year old? Doesn’t leave much room for socialization in general, let alone a girlfriend. 

I typically wind up shipping the blushing girl virgin and the older/or at least more experience guy ships; it’s definitely interesting to see it reversed now. It’s going to be really fun and challenging to incorporate this in my fic I started. 

They also confirmed next season will be darker and weirder, which I think is great. I like darker. It’s like they’ll be stripping what innocence is left of these kids because of what’s coming. Less room for high school romance, more room for primal fight mode Jonathan, yes. Go get your girl Jonathan.
