Macbeth: Do you like… have any family?
Young Siward: Family?
Young Siward, gesturing to MacDuff’s army: These guys are my family :)
Macbeth, cocking gun: Great, so you don’t.

I was a first-year MFA at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and my first performance on the mainstage was as Young Siward in Macbeth. I had a truly grisly death where Macbeth took my sword away and simultaneously gutted me with his hand axe while slitting my throat with my own sword. Opening night came, and I charge up the vom wearing 25 pounds of chainmail, sword drawn, really feeling like I had arrived. Greg Thornton, playing the title role, looks over at me, and waits for me to say my first line… which has totally disappeared from my brain.
I see Greg’s expression change from “Who is this little English solider who thinks he can defeat me” to “Who is this student who is taking an acting moment” to “Are we EVER going to be able to continue?” My whole body breaks out in sweat, and I am mortified. In what was probably five seconds but seemed an eternity, “What is thy name?” finally comes out of my mouth and Greg rolls his eyes before saying, “Thou’lt be afraid to hear it.” He kills me with a little extra relish that night, and I am so happy to get to collapse on the floor dead until the lights change and I crawl offstage with my metaphorical tail between my actual legs.
I am immune to the curse of the Scottish Play because my sister was in it.
So I have said the word ''Macbeth'' (yeah that's right I said it) many many times now, to tell people about my sister being in it. I am okay so far.
So now I'm gonna get to the real point of this post: which is that I can now actually quote Shakespeare from the amount of times I went to see my sister in Macbeth.
By the way, my sister played Fleance and Young Siward.
*ahem* so this is what I remember most of em are stupid
''He HAS no children.'' - MacDuff, Act 4
''I have said.'' - Ross, Act 4
''What is thy name?'' - Young Siward, Act 5
''Thou liest, abhorred tyrant, with my sword I shall prove the lie thou speak'st!"' - Young Siward, Act 5
''SEYTON!'' - Macbeth, Act 4
''Is this a dagger which I see before me?'' - Macbeth, Act 2
*aggressive hand scrubbing sounds* - Lady Macbeth, Act 3 (?)
''All my pretty chickens, in one fell swoop!'' - MacDuff, Act 4
lol that's it if you want more get this to 50 notes
''
Macbeth, to Young Siward: What doesn't kill me should run, because now I'm fucking pissed.
Osbjorn Bulax!!
in light of me having my own minor youngsiwardgate last night here’s a list of my actual opinions about the character design in macbeth
macbeth has to have dad energy. like is he scary? yes. of course. but it doesn’t work if he doesn’t also look like the incongruously buff high school teacher that you immediately form a parasocial relationship with and overperform for in his class because you want him to be your dad just a little bit
lady macbeth can be sexy because she IS sexy that’s her goddamn RIGHT. but she has to be scary FIRST. the scariness has to be BEFORE the sexiness. the primary necessity isn’t “hot evil seductress” it’s the sense that this woman could absolutely kill you without batting an eyelash and then would continue on to brunch with the other scotland wives and laugh and gossip about whichever family’s violation of the suburb’s house design code while knowing full well the whole time that someone is going to discover your body soon and she will not miss you
i feel like macduff needs this balance of “very formidable” and “so so tired” like he’s absolutely a warrior but he also DOESN’T want to be here
idc what you do with the witches it’s just gotta be fucked up
if your young siward doesn’t look and sound twelve (and also if macbeth doesn’t kill him, like, instantly) then what, pray tell, is the point
not to be evil but: osbjorn vs macbeth
oh, this is evil
If this ever happens, Osbjorn is dead. There's no contest. Macbeth's telepathic/telekinetic powers are so powerful, he could stop Osbjorn from a distance and incapacitate him.
The only way Osbjorn could hope to win is by sneaking up on Macbeth and attacking him, but Macbeth's a soldier--his senses are keen, and it'd be tough to slip past him.
malcolm, donalbain, is young siward around?? if he is, what do you think of him? (hi im a young siward stan, please join me and appreciate the dumbass boy)
Malcolm: Neat kid. Real enthusiastic.
