Ys II PC Engine version
Today I beat Ys II - Ancient Ys Vanished - The Final Chapter
Again, I played the Steam version, though I know it's probably a huge far cry from the PC-88 original, I'd like to try something more faithful to the original as well as Ys II, someday I just need ao pick a version and a reliable way to play them. Right now the fan translated NES versions are the only option I have unless I want to hold my phone up to the screen to translate text for the EGG CONSOLE version on Switch. I don't.
This played like Ys 1 and it was just as short, and Adol is just as much of a speedy boy as he was in the first game, though it doesn't feel like you get overpowered nearly as quickly as I did in Ys 1. There was also the added magic component but that was mostly just using the fireball spell, which was the only way you could damage most bosses.
I did find myself needing to look up a few things here and there, this is one of those games where you need to backtrack a few times. That said, the bosses didn't feel nearly as bullshit as they did in the first game. Well... mostly. One of the later bosses was tedious until I found a new piece of equipment I missed and leveled up a few times. The final boss was also a pushover because you have an invulnerability spell, you just have to kill him before your MP runs out.
I enjoyed the story, simple as it is, what can I say, I like very simple good vs evil stories. I was a little confused by it at first though, I thought maybe we were sent back in time after the events of Ys I, since the game talks about how Ys is an ancient kingdom that vanished, but not, it's just in the sky now and the game takes place during the present day. Could have been more clear.
I am definitely down to check out the rest of the series now. Adol is a total babe. He might be competing with Link in my heart for cutest silent game protagonist ( though I hear he's not so silent anymore ), I actually bought the remake of Ys 3 that released on Switch earlier, and Ys VIII which I heard is "The best one", but we'll see. I still very much love the basic ass Erdrick trilogy of Dragon Quest games more than some of the fan favorites that came later.
