A portrait of the dromaeosaurid Saurornitholestes langstoni from the Late Cretaceous of North America. This dinosaur was described in 1978 based on a fragmentary skeleton from the Dinosaur Park Formation (Alberta). Two more specimens and many isolated bones from Alberta and Montana were subsequently assigned to this genus. A nearly complete skeleton was discovered in 2014, and its skull was described in 2019. The dinosaur's snout was found to be taller and wider than that of Velociraptor, despite similar size. The premaxillary teeth, with longitudinal ridges, are intriguing. The large second tooth, heavily worn on the inner side, is particularly striking. A similar tooth was described in 1876 as Zapsalis abradens. They likely belonged to a close relative of Saurornitholestes (if not the same genus). It is believed that these teeth, like the pectinate claws of some birds, were used for grooming feathers.
In this work, I practiced drawing a monochrome "lineless" image. The lipless tip of the snout is speculative.

A dinosaur tooth of the tooth taxon cf. Zapsalis sp. from the Hell Creek Formation in Powder River County, Montana, United States. The Zapsalis tooth morphology from the Hell Creek Formation likely belongs to Acheroraptor based on similar teeth from Velociraptor and Saurornitholestes. This odd morphology seen in the premaxillary teeth of various dromaeosaurids may have been used to preen feathers.

Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Pennaraptora, Paraves, Eumaniraptora, Dromaeosauridae, Eudromaeosauria
Zapsalis is a tooth taxon from the Dinosaur Park Formation, living about 75 million years ago, in the Campanian age of the Late Cretaceous. Known from many teeth, they are very similar to teeth known from late-derived Dromaeosaurs, and as such is probably a Dromaeosaur. However, it cannot be assigned to any previously known Dromaeosaur genus.
