Obviously these things most certainly have been around much longer, but so many are very vague and applied to things without direct conversation or even correlation. Like these aren't specific pop culture references these are patterns that a lot of people resonate with. Some more tropy stuff is just good writing.

God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War is a Spiritual War. Our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television. To believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. BUT WE WON'T. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

When Anthony Bourdain was in town last August filming for his new show “The Layover,” the internet just about went bonkers with excitement. Thanks to this tech age, many of his haunts were shared, but at long last, the San Francisco episode has arrived.

Next Monday, January 9 at 9pm on the Travel Channel, the hour-long episode will air. Bourdain recently praised San Francisco as “dirty and nasty and wonderful.” Roland Passot, Danny Bowien, cablecars, and more also make cameo appearances.

Above is a video sneak peek at the episode, featuring Bourdain and Incanto chef Chris Cosentino (wearing an “I heart foie gras” t-shirt) going to the Tonga Room. Long straws are involved. In the scene, Bourdain calls the Tonga Room “the greatest place in the history of the world.” Cosentino smartly adds: “And they pour a stiff drink.” Fact.
