shout out to bitches that cant tell you shit about their special interest. the interest that has been with me for the majority of my life is squid and despite the numerous documentaries, articles and marine biology books ive read regarding them i honest to god couldnt tell you a thing about them besides "a squid is an animal that is so cutes"
aka the habsburg derby
a character being a perpetrator does not negate their victimhood and neither does their victimhood negate being a perpetrator. u can accept and reckon w both dimensions in ur analysis
there is nothing morally purifying about suffering or victimhood, it is not something that inculcates “goodness.”
one’s character has no impact on whether they were/are a victim or not, victim status is not something that is only afforded to the palatable.
it also does not = absolution.
ppl cant handle this in cartoons made for teenagers lets not get ahead of ourselves
If you start reading books again, you’ll feel at least a little better. I promise.
did you do anything gay and or trans to celebrate pride month this year
yes
no
decide the nuance of your answer for yourself this is your call
can more losers reblog this please where are my fellow No’s
A new year, a new me! And they’ll never find the original’s body….
for the book asks: 6, 11 and 15!
Ty!
6 - What books have you read in the last month?
Oo shit I didn't realise the month was over. Euripides' Elektra, Racine's Britannicus and Andromaque, Le Livre Blanc by Jean Cocteau 🔥🔥, and Alexis Piron's Métromanie. Also the daily Les Mis chapters
11 - What non-fiction books do you like if any?
My all-time shoutouts are Sodome à Paris by Thierry Pastorello aka my bible for 18thC homo/bisexuality 🙏. In a similar vein, The Aristocrat as Art: A Study of the Honnête Homme and the Dandy in Seventeenth- and Nineteenth-Century Fiction by Domna Stanton about 17th/18thC (not the primary subject but by proxy) various ideals of masculinity and how they're consciously created. Also a very good read for personal gender issues tbh if you want to rewire your brain. Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole to also put in this category of vaguely queer-related books. It's such a good exploration of an example of how a 'queer' (using the broadest sense possible) means of expression was formed in those circles and tbh I hadn't ever thought about how architecture could have a relation to it.
Moving away from those ones my other all-time favourite is Changes in the Land by Will Cronon. Ecological perspective on the economies in New England of the Native Americans and of the colonists and eventually their interactions.
And ofc I have my favs of books about V/his writings but I'm sure I've yapped about those ninety-seven times already.
15- Recommend and review a book
I have to recommend Terra Ignota to everyone here. It's a sci-fi/speculative fiction series set in the year 2400s that's very informed by the intellectual debates of the 18thC, and the author said she wanted to write it to join those conversations and to show us a world that looks how our modern world might like to the 1700s. One of the most interesting themes is gender in the world; it officially doesn't exist and is taboo to acknowledge, and has been long enough that the narrator, when thinking about ideas/stereotypes of gender, goes back to the 18thC as the frame of reference. But also there are 'trans' people in the world, who try and express or live it in different ways. Religion also is a taboo/isn't spoken of, but idk how much I can say about that before it's spoiler-y. It's about technological advancement and balancing human life and human progress, the cost of preserving peace, and in true Enlightenment fashion it doesn't answer of any of its questions. There's a sex scene copied word for word from the Marquis de Sade. Achilles and maybe-ghost-maybe-imaginary Thomas Hobbes are there.
If your lover lives in Hong Kong and cannot get to Chicago, it will be necessary for you to go to Hong Kong. Perhaps you will spend your life there, and never see Chicago again. And you will, I assure you, as long as space and time divide you from anyone you love, discover a great deal about shipping routes, airlines, earthquake, famine, disease, and war. And you will always know what time it is in Hong Kong, for you love someone who lives there. And love will simply have no choice but to go into battle with space and time and, furthermore, to win.
