Actually Cleopatra was said to have not actually been that beautiful — men said that until she opened her mouth, she was simply average. What made her beautiful according to Plutarch was her personality and intelligence. Her sparkling wit, charming personality, talent with over half a dozen languages, and in-depth knowledge of almost everything was just so impressive that she often became beautiful in their eyes.
So while that post is nice in that it’s trying to say that women are becoming more beautiful and that if you lived in 30 B.C., you could have started wars, I like this version much better.
You may not be traditionally beautiful, but goddamn neither was Cleopatra and she seduced two of the most powerful men in the world.
Can I add a very important point — The reason that you all think that Cleopatra was beautiful is because it’s a myth that has been spun around her character by men to “explain” how she was able to seduce two very important men.
It purposefully reduces her power and personality and intelligence to nothing in order that men can diminish her and explain away her lovers as just people who had been captivated by nothing more than beauty. This is a misogynistic micro-aggression which reduces women down to being unimportant, and perhaps even worthless, unless they are beautiful. It’s a problem we tackle in the media today and it’s been horribly ingrained in global cultures over hundreds of years.
This makes it all the more important to remember that Cleopatra VII was NOT considered beautiful, but could still be a very important role model for women all over the world. Beauty isn’t everything. you can achieve success through other means. Don’t let men think you can’t. And don’t let yourself think that you can’t either.
