the absolute lack of sympathy fans have towards Shane in TLG is genuinely astounding to me (and has racist undertones but that's a whole other conversation).
I understand having sympathy for Ilya, his pain is so visible and obvious, but the majority of the book is told from his point of view. It's completely biased towards his opinions on issues.
Shane's pain is not handed to you on a silver platter and it's because he's autistic. And despite that in society it's boiled down to not having social queues and being awkward and quirky, it's a lot fucking harder than that.
Shane is also in a long distance relationship, the only way he knows how Ilya is feeling is if Ilya tells him. If Ilya tells him he's okay, then Shane assumes he is, he doesn't have any visual queues to analyse or second guess. When they are together, he picks up on it, he knows something is wrong and he says something about it but Ilya is dismissive of his concerns.
But the main thing I see when it comes to the lack empathy/sympathy for Shane is his fear of being out. Shane is an extremely logical thinker (it's part of why he's so good at hockey), he knows it's safer for them to be in the closet. Ilya doesn't have American or Canadian citizenship, being out without it is extremely unsafe for Ilya as it is. Then, there's the fact that the hockey bubble is so conservative. Of course Shane is going to be scared to come out to anyone in the league, he could be (and is) completely shunned because of it. The only person who knows about hollanov is Hayden and that was ACCIDENTAL. So yes, when Ilya reveals he came out to Troy, Shane's going to be worried cause at that point in time, Troy is a homophobic stranger to him.
I've also seen people angry that in Shane's text after the plane crash he says 'I can't do this with my teammates around'? And I just think it's very obvious that he wanted to see Ilya's face and not sob and cry in front of his team? like😭 If I found out the love of my life almost DIED I would want to call them in private no matter if I'm out or not?
Anyways I just thought I'd defend Shane because the things I'm seeing are crazyyyyyyy. He was raised to be a perfect golden boy hockey player, so being gay and in love with his rival is going to make his mind trip, it's not complicated to understand. Not to mention the whole point is that his fears become reality almost instantly? That his fears turn out to be entirely reasonable? Not just him being dramatic?
Maybe the lack of understanding is because the fandom is made up of a lot of out queer ppl (or ig straight women) so they're extremely far removed from being in the closest. But I remember being terrified to come out to my friends as a teenager, let alone on a global scale. Or maybe people just hold him to a higher moral standard for... no reason in particular...
When Ilya first meets Yuna and David and he corrected Shane about the timeline, I think Ilya should have been even clearer. He could have told Yuna, his future mother in law, momager in law, etc.,
“Yuna, I’m so in love with your son and I’m serious about him. I organized a BRAND DEAL for him.”
Yuna would have planned the wedding right then and there. After she stopped crying.
Brand deals are her love language!
rachel reid doubling down AGAIN and calling shane‘s diet ridiculous and another thing he focuses too much on instead of actually important things like his very sad boyfriend… i have never seen someone be so resistant to criticism and unwilling to learn. i have never seen someone create such a complex, wonderful character that they refuse to understand and instead hate so fucking much
I'm in the mood for a war. The way Rachel Reid writes about and talks about Shane Hollander is deplorable and honestly irresponsible.
some folks who like heated rivalry are infected with the “hate Shane Hollander with a passion and only put up with him so they can read/write about Ilya Rozanov” disease” and Rachel Reid is patient zero
Are we ready to talk about how Ilya wasn't attentive or sensitive towards Shane's diet? Shane's relationship with food was very obviously deeply concerning.
I blame Rachel Reid. Not Ilya.
My Ilya would have approached the topic with care.
But the joke about looking at a picture of cake for dessert was objectively hilarious, that can stay.
No you don't get it SHANE IS A PROVIDER like he will get a few texts from Ilya and it sounds a little off so obviously the next day Ilya gets home and there's food from his favorite restaurant and a ridiculously HUGE bouquet of tulips bc he off-handedly mentioned to Shane that he loves tulips and the card has a stupid chirp and the roughest J as a signature bc God knows Shane Hollander doesn't have nice handwriting
Or or when Ilya moves to Ottawa he gets in the locker room just to find it basically overflowing with his favorite pre-game snacks and the only thing the staff can tell him is that "is from Jane?" And the day after his first game there's bluebells in there and chamomile for his mother's birthday and more tulips for his birthday, and forget-me-nots for their anniversary. To the point that the guys chirp him to hell and back for his Jane always gifting him flowers.
He mentions thinking about getting his ears pierced and like clockwork Shane is buying him the prettiest blue earrings "to match your eyes". He eyes the new collection of Rolex and next thing he knows it's in his closet. He tears up over blood having dried on his mother's necklace and the next day Shane is suddenly a specialist in jewelry cleaning.
Ilya is Shane's baby, and so help him, he will provide.
this is how it feels
“Ilya, maybe consider Svetlana” has gotta be one of the most insulting things Rachel has ever said and the fact that she said this after seeing Hudson’s performance as Shane is even worse.
Your novel got popular for being a queer romance between two men and you’re now suggesting Ilya would’ve been better off in a relationship with a woman.
You saw Hudson’s performance as Shane and how much he dedicated himself to the role and his character and you thought his onscreen love interest would be better with another character.
I’ve always defended Rachel when it came to her relationship with the cast of the show, but this one really rubbed me the wrong way.
collection of ilya in water <3 he is so beautiful <3
this image drives me insane genuinely like please the massive fucking arms the tattoos his beautiful face and perfect hair someone please stop him
There's so much of it. The future is real, but the past... well, it's all made up.
