āIām not Barack Obama. Iām not Bill Clinton. Both of them carry themselves with a naturalness that is very appealing to audiences. But Iām married to one and Iāve worked for the other, so I know how hard they work at being natural. Itās not something they just dial in. They work and they practice what theyāre going to say. Itās not that theyāre trying to be somebody else. But itās hard work to present yourself in the best possible way. You have to communicate in a way that people say: āOK, I get her.ā And that can be more difficult for a woman. Because who are your models? If you want to run for the Senate, or run for the Presidency, most of your role models are going to be men. And what works for them wonāt work for you. Women are seen through a different lens. Itās not bad. Itās just a fact. Itās really quite funny. Iāll go to these events and there will be men speaking before me, and theyāll be pounding the message, and screaming about how we need to win the election. And people will love it. And I want to do the same thing. Because I care about this stuff. But Iāve learned that I canāt be quite so passionate in my presentation. I love to wave my arms, but apparently thatās a little bit scary to people. And I canāt yell too much. It comes across as ātoo loudā or ātoo shrillā or ātoo thisā or ātoo that.ā Which is funny, because Iām always convinced that the people in the front row are loving it.ā
āiām in kind of a weird mental place right nowā i say, as if there are times when i am not in a weird mental place

SO MANy FAVES
But hereās a little secret for you: no one is ever the same thing again after anything. You are never the same twice, and much of your unhappiness comes from trying to pretend that you are. Accept that you are different each day, and do so joyfully, recognizing it for the gift it is. Work within the desires and goals of the person you are currently, until you arenāt that person anymore, and everything changes once again.

And now that you donāt have to be perfect, you can be good.

Why wasnāt friendship as good as a relationship? Why wasnāt it even better? It was two people who remained together, day after day, bound not by sex or physical attraction or money or children or property, but only by the shared agreement to keep going, the mutual dedication to a union that could never be codified.

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish someone had told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, itās just not that good. Itās trying to be good, it has potential, but itās not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase; they quit. Most people I know who do interest, creative, work went through years of this. We know our work doesnāt have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know that itās normal and the important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you finish one piece. Itās only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone Iāve ever met. Itās gonna take a while. Itās normal to take awhile. You just gotta fight your way through.
