Idk man it’s so easy to get bogged down in all the bullshit online but when my then-6 year old cousin found out I was trans he said “ok” then corrected my grandma when she misgendered me. I was once the third between a gay man and a lesbian. Two lesbians once invited me back to their place when I presented as a man. I met an AMAB nb butch who looked strikingly to outsiders like a cis man and it was one of the more sapphic experiences I’ve had. I nervously wore a boydyke shirt to pride and got 3 different cis-looking femme folks tell me they loved my shirt. I once told a trans group at a protest that any pronouns were fine for me and one person said “wow, I’m impressed and intimidated by people like that. I don’t know that I could be that chill with pronouns.” I once told a GNC friend I wished I could wear a type of “opposite” gender clothing after I had already transitioned and so it would be associated with my AGAB and he said “You could just do it.” I’ve had cishet men fight cops for me before. The first time I had a doctor ask me if my name was different than what was on my forms I had to try not to cry. Last week, a phone call with a doctor’s office where I am generally cis passing asked unprompted if my name listed is what I want to be called. It touched me then too. I told a lesbian friend once I felt like my attraction to men AND women both felt gay. She said “makes sense.” And we moved on. I go by different pronouns in different circles. I’ve had gay women love my facial hair. I’ve had gay men like my tits. It’s all out there, I promise. It can be hard to find it but I promise there is community like you and community who likes you. And it’s more messy and beautiful than tumblr discourse makes it out to be.

I think the most heartbreaking thing about any of the events in Merlin is that every choice that Merlin is forced to make to keep his mouth shut or say what he is supposed to just works to doom the narrative of the show. He could have changed so many of the outcomes of the story if he would have only said one thing different.

Merlin telling Morgana “You’re not alone in Camelot, and I can help you discover the beauty in this power that you were taught to hate and fear.”

Merlin telling Arthur “Your heart is right about the goodness in magic and we should create the kingdom that I was born to help you build.”

Merlin telling Mordred “You and I are both part of prophecies that are out of our hands but we can work to forge our own destinies within them.”

Over and over Merlin dooms himself to his fate of watching Arthur die. He does exactly what he is told and it ruins him. Every time he is forced to make an impossible decision against his own judgement it ends up burying the knife deeper.

When I say “I miss old Star Trek” please understand that I miss the formula.

I miss genre hopping. Going from a western to a thriller to action adventure and telling different stories over the season instead of the same long one. I miss captain’s logs and star dates that give some grounding and exposition. I miss bridge battle scenes reporting “shields at 47%!” and sparks flying from consoles. I miss having a cast of 7, 8 or 9 regulars, most of whom head up a particular department in fairly clearly defined roles.

What I DO NOT miss is the dominance of heterosexual white men, in front of and behind the scenes. I do not miss a gender ratio of 2 to 1 male to female on screen. I do not miss 4 out of 5 leads being men, nor 4 out of 5 being white. I do not miss the complete absence of LGBTQA people. I do not miss skin tight cat suits on women characters. I do not miss these things at all, and I’m glad they’re gone.

I want that stuff from the first paragraph, from “old Trek” combined with the representation and diversity in front of and behind the cameras of “new Trek”. I want the best of both worlds.

I am in no way excusing what Cassie did, but I think a lot of people are missing the point of her storyline. She was raised in a way that absolutely fucked her idea of love, with her father leaving and how she was treated at a young age because of her body. To her, male validation=love and she will do anything to get that. I think this is also why her character is nude so often; in some of these scenes you can tell Cassie isn’t completely comfortable. People say she is being sexualized too much, but I think that is literally the point. To show how disgusting and uncomfortable the sexualisation of young girls is and the shit we are expected to do for men. Cassie going out with Nate is absolutely fucked but it also shows the effect of being treated like an object your whole life.

To me the point of this storyline is glaringly obvious and it kinda sucks to see people shitting on cassie all the time.
