Well we’ve entered a new season, so it’s time for some first impressions. Here’s what’s worth checking out from best to worst, ranked by my taste.
Absurdist comedy is a real hit-or-miss, but this show hit me dead on. Chio goes to school, and has wacky adventures along the way. So far those adventures focus on Chio being a putz and getting herself into awkward situations. Definite a laugh at her, not with, sort of show
“Osmosis Jones the anime” is perhaps accurate, but definitely under selling it. Cells is an action comedy staring a personified ditzy red blood cell and a personified violent white blood cell. It’s fun and educational!
This is a strange one, and it’s far better than I expected. What if Fooly Cooly had a plot and a better focus on non-sexual themes? Judging by episode 1, this is what you’d get.
In the cutthroat world of playing beach volleyball for fun, everything hinges on the connection between teammates. TBH, the show doesn’t take itself that seriously, there’s just one character who’s that high strung. The protagonist on the other hand is just the chillest and she makes this show fun. Unfortunately it suffers from some bad CG and weirdly quiet sound design.
Shoujo ☆ Kageki Revue Starlight is a battle royal idol show, in which Akemi Homura transfers to drama school and if you die in auditions you die in real life. And did I mention the giraffe? You can’t appreciate this show until you watch it, so please do. It might just end up among the best of this season.
Dropkick is part Coyote-and-Roadrunner-style slapstick comedy and part touching story about an earthbound angel who can’t return to heaven because she misplaced her halo. Come for a couple cheap laughs, stay for all the characters besides Jashin.
Asobi is a clubroom comedy that goes hard on “lol random” and reaction faces.
A Mafia drama centered on the upstart ganglord, Ash Lynx, who stumbles onto a secret new drug. It’s able to take on a serious subject while still being a ton of fun along the way.
The badminton anime. This is a high drama sports show. At least two characters have had their lives ruined by badminton. And they’re going to face off in episode 2. Good use of CG on the shuttlecock, bad use of jiggle physics with Nagisa’s urgent need for a sportsbra.
