hivebreedβ:
Β Β Β Β WITH WIDE EYES, TAK WATCHED every single fearful twitch and every laboured breath. her empathic abilities might have been severely dampenedβ as a younger smeet, she would have been able to feel the shudders and pounding heartbeats as her own and taste the static in the airβ but she was nonetheless observant. miyuki KNEW, and something told tak that she had known for quite some time.Β
that feeble little spark of hope continued to burn. perhaps, tak wasnβt alone. perhaps, someone would be able to save her and her familyβ well, what was LEFT.Β
an instinctive flinch was given in response to her tallestβs kind, almost motherly, touch, but soon barriers receded for favour of relaxing under her claws. this wasnβt always strange to her. sheβd had a shman before. MANY of them. she could still hear their soft voices, although she could no longer make out the words.Β
βhow do i SURVIVE?β the bowed hive queen rasped.Β βi thought that i was competent enough to keep all ofββ she vaguely gestured to herselfβΒ βTHIS a secret, but look at what they did to me. i canβt even remember all that was done. eshi shmen kushmiβ and my familyββΒ
a lump formed in her throat, but she couldnβt birth any tears. so many of her memories were gone and those that were left were corrupted, making her question their legitimacy. red never laughed like that; purple never looked to her for help. zim was self-absorbed and destructive. he certainly wasnβt herβ herβ well, they had never been close, had they?Β
her fists clenched the bottom of her purple tunic. she could feel herself changing, being remolded into the empireβs image, and that frightened her more than anything else. βwhat happened to red and purple? what happened to zim? what happened to ME? if itβs not in your power to help me, then at least tell me that so that i canβ¦ mend the pieces.βΒ
Β Β Β Cerulean hues watched in steady seriousness to the burst of growing anguish and grief. Taks despair was genuine enough that she couldnβt deny its authenticity. Β Something so deeply seated that even if no tears were shed, Miyuki could read it in just the small of her clenched fists. Frustration had all but run to their very limits. Anyone else might have shied away with discomfort at the emotional turmoil. The Empire not built on catering to the whims of such intense emotions. β But she did not budge and only furrowed her brow as if somewhere in her mind, she too was sharing the same frustration that Tak was.
Β Β Β The Control Brains had taken everything from her, deprived her of everything she knew and replaced it with images of strict compliance. Any slight acts of defiance met with harsh punishments as an example to those who might think about doing the same. This was the life of the βgreatβ Irken Empire.
Β Β Β Miyuki held her ground. Gentle hands abstractedly stroking Taks antenna back. Processing what was said and growing ever weary to the torture herself.
If itβs not in your power to help me, then at least tell me that so that I can... mend the pieces.
Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Painful silence.
What could she do? What can she do to stop this? All of this. No one deserved this type of torment.
Β Β Β Pulling away, Miyuki stood with a deep tired exhale. Stiff and rigid. Trying not to give into the losing battle of wanting to send Tak away to avoid her own conflicting emotions. -But what would that make her?
Β Β Β Clenching her jaw, she turned away. Staring off at the distant wall in some semblance of a sort of deep reflection. She could practically feel the heated mechanical stare of the Control Brains looking down on her. Daring her to speak out against their perfect law and order. It only served to further fuel her resentment for them.
Crossing her arms over her chest, she willed herself to make a decision and turned once more to catch the young soldierβs gaze.
Β Β Β βThere are some thingsβ¦I cannot help,β her voice was desolate, but she eventually allowed herself a wary smile as she continued. βBut this does not mean I will not make an effort to see what can be done regarding your situation. There is a process, but It will get done. As of now, I place you under myΒ protection, effectiveΒ immediately. Have faith,Β zakβme. Everything will be okay. Can you trust me?β

@tallestmiyukiiβΒ asked:Β βWhen the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you learn.β
Β Β Β Β TAK HAS ALWAYS FELT SUCH AN ACHE. when the control brains robbed her of her wings, they replaced them with the nigh unbearable burden of conformity. sheβd tried to LEARN, tried to quell her outrage and bite her tongue, but hers was once a genuine soul. she chafed under pretending to be (and support) everything she was against. she paid the price for thatβ in blood and memory and the frayed edges of once strong familial bonds.Β
melancholic violet hues flicker towards miyukiβs similarly pensive features, and something softens in takβs normally stony countenance. she realises that she isnβt the only one who has suffered at the hands of the control brains. if miyuki was born with foreign instincts and knowledge of old irken, then she, too, has had to swallow their raceβs corruption, apart from the othersβ implanted ignorance. she, too, has had to live in fear of discovery and termination. tak wonders if she was isolated from family, too, or if she has always been ALONE.Β
she wouldnβt dare to do such in public, but now that they are alone, perhaps there is still a bit of the smeet the control brains tried to kill in herβ she tremulously raises a hand to grasp onto one of miyukiβs own.Β
βKASH MAβI,β she murmurs, and the apology is spoken for them both. but it is a poor recompense for their ever-present grief, and so she falls silent again.Β
Β Β Β Miyuki felt her antennae twitch unconsciously at the brush of a trembling hand grasping at her own. She hesitated, drawing her hand away against her unruly anxieties for a moment before reaching back the next to take a firm hold. An unexpected sense of protectiveness overcoming her fear of being found.
Β Β Β Tak had been a comforting presence under the merciless ache. A warm light shining through the darkness that threatened to pull her under its crushing waves. If it were not for their coincidental meeting that fated day, Miyuki suspected she would have gone insane. Delving deeper into that darkening pit of madness she knew was only a one-way trip.
Β Β Β A spiraling loop of ever-increasing loneliness cutting into her psyche that left her silently begging for some sense of comfort that followed her initiation as ruling Almighty Tallest. It was as uncontrollable as the gentle voice in the back of her head. Only growing in intensity at her will to ignore it. -But she could not sink to her knees just yet. Cause that had meant the Control Brains had won. Just another Irken stomped into submission under their manipulative gaze. She refused to stand down and let others suffer under the same weight she had. She could not back down, not yet.
Β Β Β βYouβre upset.β She paused letting Takβs mind wander before continuing. A slight frown covering her features as her gaze fell onto the other beside her. βYouβve always been so strong. Tell me what troubles you.β
who was the previous tallest?
βOhβ¦,β Miyuki muttered tensely under her breath, just barely masking the rumble threating to escape her throat. βHim.β Β

Β Β Β Β THAT WILL BE ALL, ABSHE.Β
her tallestβs harsh command is what fully brings tak back to the present. her vision clears, and she becomes painfully aware of a bitter tang on the airβ FEAR. her empathy is severely dampened, but not all the way gone. not yetβ but whose fear is it? she wonders. HERS or MIYUKIβS?Β
her grip on the cup of nectar tightens slightly as she holds it against her uniform, and dread pools in her already roiling spooch. old speaks of irken kind. may the void swallow her whole. she hadnβt meantβ it wasnβtβ she is NORMAL. not defective. it was just an inconsequential slip. she tries to comfort herself with these platitudes, yet deep down, she still knows the truth.Β
she is a being never meant to exist, and yet sheβs slipping through the cracks. why are they trying so hard to CORRECT her? why not terminate her and be done with it? what are they trying to prevent her from knowing?Β
a controlled shock from her inhibitor silences those thoughts, the only indication of such being a slight jerk of her head. she wants to cry out of frustration, but sheβd long ago ran out of tears.Β
tak finds the courage to glance up, and a bit of her mask shatters. her ultraviolet hues are wide and frightened, confused, aching with a loss that she cannot quite remember.Β
βkash maβi,β she repeats the service droneβs apology,Β βi-i meant no offense. these wordsβ¦ often come to me. they were taught to me when i was a smeet.β her brow furrows. her claws once more ghost up towards her cranial inhibitor before sharply falling. mustnβt touch that or theyβll come again.Β βi donβt knowβ i canβt remember by WHO.βΒ
a beat of leaden silence passes between themΒ
and when tak speaks again, her voice is soft and plaintive, almost smeet-like, for what are irkens in the military academy but children? they graduate as elite soldiers at a mere seventy years of ageβ decades before the old world coming-of-age ceremony.Β
βyou UNDERSTOOD meβ¦ so do you hear them, too?βΒ
Β Β Β For the first time in a long time, there was nothing to appease her racing heart. If it were up to her, she was confident Tak could hear it. Heart pounding in her chest. Antenna quivering. Fear. It tortured her conscience in just those few short seconds. Engulfing her mind and knocking all other thoughts aside in the moment. -And although the adrenaline pumping through her system already began to wane, she could still feel the tension in her shoulders. Refusing to release their steady hold while her PAK clicked feverishly on her back to begin its focus on soothing her organic body.
She had said too much already. Had lost her nerve. Squandered the mask she had tried so hard to uphold, and all it took for it to crumble was⦠She felt ashamed. Tallest did not let themselves fall apart over such trivial things. Admitting that she heard them as well to confirm Taks inquiry was a risk. -But was it the right thing to do? To cover up everything with a lie, like she always had done.
Β Β Β Unsure of what to say, she stood there for a few moments before finally letting her claws relax. Sighing deeply in hopes it was the reset she needed to finally collect her muddled thoughts. What was it that she was so afraid of? It was not like she had not tiptoed around the Control Brains rules before. Had cheated her way through unspeakable things that would surely erase her from the future collective. What was so different to admitting something to a smeet for Irk sake? Β Β Β When she finally met Taks gaze again, something had changed, and Miyukiβs antenna seemed to wilt under the strain of the information. What sat before her was not a hardened soldier, but a smeet forced into a world of hardships under a cruel, secretive leadership. Misunderstood and punished for anything slightly out of line of what was considered satisfactory behavior. Something about it all was so familiarβ¦
Β Β Β βI would be lying if I were to claim that I did not hearβ¦something,β she uttered, stepping around from her desk to stand in front of the violet eyed Irken. Reaching down to gently pry the cup from Taks tightening hold and set it aside.
Β Β Β Then she did something unspeakable and crouched down to Taks level as best as she could. Placing her hand atop her head as if it would sooth away everything that might frightened her. One claw even curiously brushed near her cranial inhibitor. She would need to find out who ordered it be placed.
Β Β She smiled and spoke softly, βthese voices are not something to be ashamed of Tak. It is a gift as it is a mystery. We Irkens are so set in our ways, anything out of the ordinary is attacked without truly coming to understand it -But do not let that scare you. Now thenβ¦, do you want me to give you advice or do you want me to listen? It will be our secret, between just me and you. I give you my promise.β
hivebreedβ:
Β Β Β Β TAK WASNβT EXPECTING MIYUKI TO INSIST, although given her reputation as both a scientist and soldier, it isnβt surprising. one doesnβt make history without questioning things. tak cants her head, antennae lowering in thought. odd. she canβt remember ever hearing someone tell her that before.
when the drone enters, tak steps aside, not wishing to get in the way of the otherβs work, especially since she was bringing something for a tallest. but her habitual obsequiousness is soon eclipsed by more confusion at the fact that she has TWO plates with her.
o h.
this really is a test, tak frantically thinks. is she here to POISON me for my previous disrespect? is her kindness merely an ACT? perhaps, i truly had offended her by speaking so openly about red. or, perhaps she had heard about my last row with purple? theyβre nearly ready to graduate and yet they are acting like freshly-hatched smeets! small irkens already have a difficult time of it without their hazing.
tak tries to still her claws from shaking as she accepts the plate from the drone. well, she muses, if poison is indeed involved, it is a far better way to die than from an existence evaluation.
she feels cold, numb, as she lowers herself onto the seat that the drone retrieves and stares down at the cake roll. this canβt be real. everything is blurring around the edges. thatβs dangerous. she canβt lose herself to nerves. not now.
what did she do to stave off this sort of attack before? when she speaks, her voice seems far away. βiβd like warmed nectar, tanshβre.β so far away that she doesnβt register that sheβs speaking words that are no longer a part of a modern irkenβs lexicon. {it seems like the last re-encoding wasnβt completely successful, after all.}Β
she resists the urge to twist her uniform, or worse, tug and pull at the inhibitor. she canβt remember what happened the last time she did, but it wasnβt GOOD, and so she busied herself with taking a small bite. her spuch still roils, but the sweet taste is comforting in its own way, and perhaps miyuki was right in deducing that she needed to eat after her sparring match.
tak canβt remember the last time she had rations.
when the drone returns, tak sets her plate down in her lap in order to cradle the cup to her chest. βmesh.β the familiar smell is sobering, and the warmth seeps through her gloves and uniform. things come back into focus, if only a little.
The drone pauses, βpardon?β Β Β Β βTanshβre.β If she had heard it correctly the first time, she didnβt let herself. Wholly convincing herself that her antenna were simply playing tricks on her. She had been particularly stressed as of late; her PAK may have needed some fine tuning perhaps. Something she had put off for much longer than was necessarily recommended by her personal PAK technicians. She blamed her own growing paranoia for the matter. -Having another look through your PAKS inner workings was not even a bit comforting in the slightest.
Β Β Β However, hearing the second uttered word caused her to jerk away from the mundane task in front of her unexpectantly. Sparks flying from her tool only to highlight her panicked expression, fizzing out just as quickly into a piercing unapproving gaze. Her claws gripping tightly at the sides of her desk. βThat will be all, abshe,β she voices sharply.
βK-kash maβI,β the drone squeaks, antenna flattening against their head. Struggling to keep eye contact with their esteemed leaders ever narrowing eyes. βI heed and obey, my tallest.β Β Β Β It should have been reassuring. Hearing those ancient words leave the young Irkens mouth. The very same words echoed in the back of her mind when speaking. Pleading, always begging to be let out, it sounded strange hearing it come from another for the first time, having never verbally spoken them herself. Not even in the private of her own chambers did she give in to it. Giving in so easily with such high repercussions gave her more than second thoughts. She had already been on thin ice with the Control Brains. Their metallic stare looking for whatever reasons to question her loyalty whenever she was in their vicinity. Allowing them a chance to rid her of her title, and assuredly an existence evaluation in question that followed. They had done it before, not to one, but to several Tallest in question long before her own hatching. It would be no big loss for them to do it again. They had Spork, and the ones after. -But she couldnβt let that happen, not yet. Β Β Β It was within her rightful duty to report and punish Irkens such as Takβ¦ and there was only so many chances an Irken could be given. (And it was not many.) Taks records said as much, but Miyuki had half a mind to question half of the comments and history in it. Like someone may have been trying to keep something from her. (Spork came to mind in that moment.) She could let it slideβ¦this once. Perhaps let Tak know she was not alone in her struggles. -And with the drones departure, she allowed herself to relax, but only slightly.
Β Β Β βShpo zekoz; we donβt know who may be listening. That drone may be none the wiser to the old speaks of Irken kind, but you need know when to better control yourself. I suspected something was amiss in your filesβ¦I wouldnβt have guessed it would be thisβ¦ Explain to me. Explain to me where you heard these words.β
