Ok, so here goes nothing! I'm Tam, this is my writing blog and my main is @sailor-lady which you'll see in replies and in follows.

I've been writing for a long time and am really pushing to finish my WIP now. Its untitled but I'm sorta placeholder-y calling it 7N (the main story takes place in a part of the world called the Seven Nations, a collection of city-states)

I have a lot of inspirations and and history for these characters, so really I'm just turning them into one coherent whole! Lets meet a few, shall we?

Mal/Maelus: 15-23 over the course of tbe first book. He/him. Mal is the last heir to his clan and is taken in by another powerful clan after the disaster that befalls his clan. He struggles to find his own identity and belonging in a strange and sometimes hostile place. He is a powerful mage but as an outsider that places him in a precarious position in this new clan.

Curse: 19-27. He/him. A rogue mage who comes to the rescue of a group of young mages, not much is known about him but Mal finds a strange camaraderie with him as they keep meeting. But when they discover their shared past, will it bring them together or drive them apart?

Cayn: 14-22. He/him. One of the heirs of Mal's adoptive clan, Cayn is a bright and powerful mage and a promising heir, but will his desire for power be his undoing?

Veris: 15-23. She/her. Veris is a junior mage in Cayn's clan, very clever with developing new spells and shields, but not especially powerful in her own right.

Riko: ??. She/they. Riko is a Firesinger, a clan of traveling traders. She is one of their specialists, traveling alone to find new trade routes as well as small amounts of specialty trade items. She's quick and inventive, and resourceful as is required when crossing the continent alone with important goods and information.

PLOT: 7N starts with the destruction of Mal's clan and his adoption into Cayn's clan, not a universally approved decision but accepted by most as the best of a bad batch of options. We see him and Cayn growing together as friends and rivals. As they grow into adulthood, there are dark clouds gathering over the seven nations, evil is moving and demons begin to appear in the night. They meet a rogue mage who may be able to help them on their journey--or bring their world crashing down. Will Mal and his friends be able to defeat the forces moving against the seven nations or will they be driven apart and conquered by greed and fear?

These are Fanarts of a Fanfic named Towards the Sun. There are no words how much I love it. I mean, the prologue broke my hard so many times, but it was because it is so well done! (Still, I was suffering the whole time hahaha)

I didn't know how much I needed an story about them as sibling bonding until then and now is my favorite trope. (Also, all the ironic situation is kinda funny haha) I'd like to draw more of them. ❤️

So I made a set of MDZS copies for an exchange.

I used the same typeset I did for my copies, not made by me. I didn't think I could do any better.

The best way I knew to make these fancy, without copying the set I made for me, was to do them full leatherbound. I had recently bought some leather from an auction in California and one of my fellow Renegade members was lovely enough to drive it all the way to TX for me when she moved.

So I didn't get the materials for this until almost June, and then my summer has been, uh, full of BS. Anyway, here's the finished product.

The design was determined by the color of the leather I got. These were some very lovely high quality goatskins from a defunct bindery. I honestly thought I was buying black and brown leather and I ended up with this deep blue and some greenish-brown.

So I decided to use the blue. I was also unable to purchase additional materials so I used what I had for endpages and everything else.

For cover decoration I decided it would be best to use the Foil Quill attachment for my Cricut, something I hadn't yet tried. Doing that on such expensive materials, when I had a deadline, was definitely a choice. I ended up having issues with where the decoration was placed, so I had to do some fudging when making the cases. And some of the foiling came out rougher than others and I have no idea why....

The designs are Sect symbols, of course, but from different sources, depending on what I thought would work best with the foil quill. We have the Jiang symbol from the donghua, the Wen symbol from the donghua, and the Lan symbol from CQL.

The spines have faux raised bands which I had to play with to get placed correctly since the decoration got shifted on some of them.

I'm very, very excited to show this off! Pearls For a Funeral and Bullets For a Wedding are a wonderful noir AU by @jadedbirch, featuring Wei Wuxian as a detective and Lan Wangji as the Chanel-bedecked femme fatale. I've done mostly historical fics so it was excited to work on something more "modern" (well... within the last 100 years).

The joy of doing two stories is that you can do some fun structures like tête-bêche. You read one story as usual and then you can flip the book over and the read the other story! This also presents opportunities to do complementary and integrated designs.

San Francisco is basically its own character in these fics, so I did a flippable skyline for the cover. I used Hikari Nashiji and silk moire bookcloth as a nod to Lan Wangji's taste in clothes.

As usual, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's colors don't always mesh well together, but it's VERY easy to have complementary designs for each story.

Animorphs #20-22 by @kaaauthor

This is a remake of a book I made almost exactly two years ago. That was the 11th book I ever made and this one is the 50th (!) I asked K.A. Applegate to sign the book while it was still in sheets, so I only had one chance to get it right.

🐅 Animorphs 20-22 was the first serialized arc in the 90s book series.

🐅 The heroes recruit a new kid to their guerilla team and grant him morphing powers, only for his selfish and sociopathic tendencies to jeopardize their fight against the alien invasion.

🐅 Young readers were challenged by this subversion of the "new kid" trope and the moral dilemma that developed. Do they kill a fellow teammate? How else can they neutralize him?

🐅 ALSO: Can these middle schoolers crash the G7 Summit and save Boris Yeltsin, Bill Clinton, and other heads of state from infestation?

Eos emerged from the pool and stretched and his spine cracked with a hundred years of spent tension.

“Sounds like you needed that.” Said Nyssa, who had been sitting by the pool, waiting.

Eos took in their surroundings for the first time. The two of them were in a cave, lit by a seam of glowing mushrooms overhead. The water reached up to Eos’s waist; the pool was black as space and just as cold. Strangely, they didn’t shiver. The cold was just a curiosity.

The water did not rippled as Eos walked towards its edge. Reflected in the pool’s perfect obsidian surface were Eos, Nyssa, and the fungal bioluminescence which turned the dark water into a cosmos.

“I’m sorry … who are you?” Asked Eos, as they clambered up onto the rough rock floor. “For that matter, who am I?”

“You’re Eos. I’m Nyssa.” She smiled and her smile told a story of grief and mischief. “And this is Stinger.”

For the first time, Eos noticed the creature sitting in Nyssa’s lap. It was somewhere between a hedgehog, a badger, a wolverine and patch of weeds, with green leaves and barbs sticking up like fur.

“How did I get here?”

“We came in together. We were in a bit of a state, apparently. Your soul must have been more ragged than mine, as I crawled out a couple of days ago.”

“I remember fire like old rot. The face of a god carved in the wind.” Eos winced at the memory, like picking at scars on their brain. “And pain. Lots of pain.”

Here we go! I have some smaller books to share as well, but I've been absolutely VIBRATING with excitement to share a BIG one, and I'm going to indulge myself and post that today, then figure out words for the rest. Because I bound a new cnovel. Check it out, guys, I bound jwqs/clear and muddy loss of love :D

Let me indulge myself and backtrack a little! First, these are quarto books, so they're short. But I think these average a little under 500 pages each, and jwqs is a LONG book (my beloved), and this adds up to a total eleven inches of lesbians. More like twelve once they're in their cases. It's over a million characters in Chinese and I think the English translation comes in somewhere around 890k, it's HUGE

Making these books was SO FUN, I hadn't read jwqs and still haven't, and will probably read on my phone when I do. I don't have any exciting photos of the typesetting, but I knew this was an imperial succession story, and that made me nervous, those stories don't always click for me. Well, the process of typesetting and adding footnotes for this beast definitely confirmed that I'm going to have a good time with this thing when I have the time to read it, but there was also so much going on that only the vaguest of spoilers sank in. I went into an absolute FRENZY of typesetting, and after I printed, cut and folded it, well. That was one afternoon of sewing. You're looking at the reason I'm scrambling to make up a few hours of missed work, hahaha

After that, I needed cases. At the very beginning of march, I received a shipment of some FASCINATING bookcloth. It's called Duo, and it's made by layering a thin gauzy fabric of one color over paper of a different color. Depending on the combos, you get a really cool range of color-shifting effects. And they've gone out of production! But I was part of a group order to get some of the goods, and hadn't yet finished a new project. Reader, I went for it.

That purple and green is bananas!!!! It's so hard to photograph, this midnight picture of a few cases is one of my most successful attempts to capture the full range up close. Originally I'd been thinking of trying to evoke imperial gold, but I figured this was still the kind of drama and luxury suited the book, and also something something the hidden colors suited Qi Yan's character. I tied it back a little to the imperial gold with the endpapers, then titled them in silver foil, since the endpapers had silver in them.

But once the books were made, I felt like it wanted something... more. Something like a BOX!

And me, I chase novelty. A set this large would be tricky for anything clamshell, but a slipcase for all seven would leave books tipping all over if it was wide open, but putting walls between slots would be demanding in terms of precision and would risk similarly-sized books getting stuck in the wrong slots. Then I remembered learning about slipcases where you could put in a little insert to support the weight of the text block, and the concept SNAPPED into place.

Colors aren't going to photograph well at midnight, but I made the supports using the scraps and off-cuts from my endpapers, to tie it back into the bindings. The back of the case is lined in more of the duo, and the walls are lined with a faux leather bookcloth I like a lot, it feels buttery smooth and seemed like a good neutral material to tie the papers and bookcloth together. I listened to some of the DEEPEST layers from the nine-hour conspiracy theory iceberg video while I was working on this, haha, it was a TRIP.

And in the end, each of the supports is sized to comfortably sit in the smallest of the volumes, and evenly spaced, so I believe it will take the books in any order with no problems. It's easy to grab the books without having to cut notches into the walls to grab them from. And even though weight is less of an issue for quarto sizing, the books in here have their weight supported no matter what angle the box is at! I'm so, so pleased with how this concept worked out and definitely plan to do more with it in the future.

So there we are! Jing Wei Qing Shang! I had such a fabulous time with this project, and I'm so excited to get to share it with all of you. The story was fun to work with, the bindings and box were fun to make, and everything here came together just as well as I could possibly have hoped. I'm so proud of this, and incredibly, incredibly excited to show it to you!

“one must imagine sisyphus happy” no, one must imagine him a stubborn asshole who thinks he’s smarter than everyone including the gods. i’ve heard plenty of versions where hades gives him the CHOICE to roll the boulder up the hill; it’s the only way he’s getting into elysium. if he wants to walk away, fine! he’ll just be relegated to the asphodel meadows (the “nosebleed/overflow” section of the underworld where all the normies end up).

and sisyphus, well, he’s a goddamn king. he cheated death! twice! a simple boulder is no match for his mighty wit.

hades’ punishment isn’t “you are forced to perform an unwinnable task forever”. it must fit sisyphus’ crimes. his hubris. any sane person, and quite a few insane ones, would spend a while pushing the boulder, maybe a few hours, maybe a few months, and eventually realize it was futile. an eternity in a peaceful meadow, not alone, not tortured, seems agreeable. but not to sisyphus. no, he’s too famous, too smart for that. he’ll get it to the top this time. this time. this time for sure.

Who wants to make a peller box?

Guess what! I finally gathered my pages of scribbled notes, my camera of haphazard in-progress pictures, and finally compiled a set of instructions for making one of these bad boys!

And not only that, but I've got two versions of this baby. I like mixing and matching my unit families because sometimes 1/32 inch sparks joy and sometimes 14 mm is just so convenient, but especially since all of my chipboard comes in english thicknesses, here's a version of the process for my fellow imperial units weirdos:

Mad credit of course goes to Hugo Peller, who developed these things in the first place, but also to Jack Fetterer, who preserved a set of notes from a 1990 class, which, as far as I can tell, are the most complete set of instructions available online. But I'm an engineer, I couldn't be satisfied there, I had bludgeon it into a system of equations, sorted by usage and material. And I also go into some of the hiccups I ran into trying to follow those class instructions, like being a green amateur at leatherwork, or not having the equipment to saw plywood boards in my apartment. These instructions still do make some unfair assumptions about the base knowledge level of anyone who wants to give this a try, like using bookcloth rather than plain cloth, but I may try to loop back and adjust that soon.

I can't claim any kind of expertise in this type of work, but I beat my head against an interesting problem, and it's time to share what I got out of it! And, secret goal, I want to help more people make more cool things, and maybe improve on my process in ways I can absorb and chew on in the future. Save my work, change it, I dare anyone who sees this to improve it!! I want it to be better. Credit would be cool, and of course the actual experts I leveraged for this deserve all the credit in the world, but that's not my priority. I want the world to have more exciting things in it, and I want more people to have exciting skills. Go forth and go nuts!!

an artist i follow got an ask about whether it was alright to use their art as covers for fanfic bookbinding and i'm. sorry i must have missed this discourse but since when are people outright printing out other people's work and binding them into books? do you contact and get author's permission (sure as fuck hope so)? and how do we writers feel about that, because i certainly feel very uncomfortable with that idea. i mean not to spoil the artistic expression of bookbinding because it's beautiful work that i most certainly could not do, but. you can access them stories any time you want on the websites where they were originally posted. why print them? again i mean i get the pleasure of holding & reading physical books, i much prefer that too, but like. get some books i guess? sorry i come from a place of honesty and tbh surprise and confusion about this whole thing. someone tell me how we're feeling about this. someone explain to me why it's being done. i just wanna understand

As someone who lives in a conservative country (Malaysia) and who has been in fandom for decades, I have seen sites like LiveJournal and FanFiction.net purge many NSFW fics, and of late there has been tens of thousands of fics being privated or deleted on AO3 as a result of authors not wanting their works to be scraped by snoopy AI-bots (Twitter and several art sites recently went through the same thing with AI art bots scraping people's artwork).

Hell, AO3 is currently blocked in China and FanFiction.net is occasionally blocked in Malaysia. Indonesia has blocked Tumblr, Turkey has periodically blocked YouTube, and many other nations have their own policies on blocking or deleting "offensive content", even if it's just a story of two guys kissing.

So I have personally seen fanfics and fanart I love get blocked and deleted out of existence time and time again, and it is heartbreaking to be a long-time fan of something to see a barren wasteland that was made from the scrubbing of stories. Which is why nowadays I try to save the ones I like by either downloading them or printing them. The adage "you have no idea what you had until it's gone" is very true for fans who have been through this.

And mainly for ficbinding, we usually do ask authors and artists for their permission to bind fics. And there is even a tradition of making an author copy of fics as a thank-you for putting such gorgeous works out there! For us, a well-written fic can be better than some of the published literature in bookstores (especially in censorship-heavy nations), and so we honor that creativity by turning something digital into something real, something that can take pride of place next to all the published works on a bookshelf.

Most of us do not make any profit from this, as we see it as detrimental to the idea of fandom and collaboration for all. For us, ficbinding is a labor of love for wordsmiths that have touched our hearts.

Realised I had another point that keystonepublishing didn’t touch on so here’s a pic of my tags.

Another reason ficbinding is popular and growing in popularity is because it’s an accessibility aid. A lot of people out there struggle with reading on screens, especially long works. Physical copies allow some people to actually read and engage with some works they wouldn’t have been able to digitally. As someone who ALSO podfics (I’m aiming for all the fandom related roles I’m collecting them like Pokémon cards) I believe in fandom accessibility and creating versions of fic for people to enjoy fic they otherwise could not have for whatever reason. Not that this means writers are obligated or should be pressured into giving permission to ficbinders but it’s just another reason people engage in it. Also, OP asked how writers generally feel about ficbinding and I obviously cannot speak for all of us but what I’ve encountered personally has been overwhelmingly pro fanbinding.

I am not an author, unfortunately, but I ask unless someone has a blanket permission on their account. If binding (or any other form of transformative work like podfic) is unwelcome OR welcome, I HIGHLY recommend adding a blanket statement to your account.

My reasoning for binding: long-term fandom experience tells me that fandom is at its best when it is collaborative. I have very few fandom related skills: I don't write, can't draw, don't theorize, but I can make sure a work lives past its website; I can be an archivist.

Plus, fanfic started as physical copies shared through the mail and among friends. It feels like going back to our roots. Just bigger.

Having mailed a few folks their books, there is nothing better than hearing that an author you love and have followed through the whole process was dancing around the kitchen because they can hold how much work they successfully completed. They are an author, whether the world recognizes them as such or not.

The gift economy makes it for me. And while I personally agree that it isn't different than a PDF, I also respect that it's your work and if you don't want it physical, I'm not going to go against that. It makes it feel different, that's why I do it.
