These are the facts: Daemon had Jaehaerys beheaded, leaving Helaena vulnerable and traumatised. Rhaenyra never punished him, instead she welcomes him back with open arms. She also still demands Aegon’s head claiming “a son for a son”, wants Aemond dead because he’s the one who killed Luke and will probably go after Daeron too as he’s a threat to Jace.
Is it cruel? Yes. Should Rhaenyra care that it’s cruel? No.
Rhaenyra’s proved she’ll let Daemon get away with kinslaying, and doesn’t give a crap about Helaena’s trauma. So how does Alicent benefit from this one sided deal?
She’s not going to let Alicent leave with her daughter and grandchild, they’re too valuable as hostages. Now that she’s been branded a traitor she has no one to defend her from Rhaenyra’s wrath and Daemon’s brutality.
Nothing about 2x08 can be justified as politically intelligent on Alicent’s part: she’s signed the death warrant for the men, and left the women at the mercy of a Queen who has no qualms with her husband killing children.
!!!
even if Rhaenyra (who technically has not agreed) did let Alicent, Helaena (who I guess the show thinks will just be fine with all her male relatives dying) and Jaehaera did manage to escape they don't know how to live a simple life the likely options wherever they end up is being taken hostage and held for ransom as they've made an enemy of both factions of the war, sold into sexual slavery, robbed and/or raped (especially during a war, commoners are already being raped and killed), maybe even working in a brothel out of desperation because they'd be starving, probably homeless and a sex work is sadly the only "work" they'd be qualified to do. It would really be a dark, miserable existence and I don't think the writers understand what running off to live an "unremarkable" life would actually mean, especially for two noble ladies out there alone.
Such an interesting take! I did think of it too and wondered if the episode would address what alicent actually means to do if that plan happened, but they didn’t.
It also made me wonder if highborn ladies were taught how to swim. Is it like a thing in universe? She was raised in the red keep for a long time and I’m wondering if they’re teaching noble girls how to swim and stuff like that.
you know what else is a choice. rhaenyra looking alicent hightower in the face and saying 'still you imagine you can have all you want'
the same alicent who had to surrender her body, her autonomy, her future, her dreams, the same alicent who got eaten up by the crown and spat back out after having 4 kids in 5 years, and got shown time and time again by viserys/house targaryen at large that none of those sacrifices mattered
alicent isn't the one who spent the last 20 years doing what she wanted and getting all she wanted and facing no consequences. like she demonstrably isn't
It’s not that Alicent herself wants to seek absolution, its the fact that the on-screen narrative is convinced that she HAS to, and she has to humiliate herself for it. I hate it here :/
“It was ALL for nothing! That’s why she’s defacting!” What’s actually for nothing was viserys marrying her at 14 and getting her pregnant to have his sons very shortly after he, controversially, named rhaenyra his heir.
Viserys’ sons, and Rhaenyra’s brothers being a threat is absolutely a THING. This succession crisis is absolutely a THING.
As long as they’re alive, they’re a threat and with a bounty prize on their heads. Even if rhaenyra doesn’t do it, daemon would.
Viserys married a girl his daughter’s age, got her pregnant and had her delivering kids from the ages 15-20 ALL FOR NOTHING. There lives were always at stake, they were always going to die. Even if team green never did anything, how would Rhaenyra’s claim be solidified if her brother were well and alive.
Their allegiance and support for Rhaenyra is meaningless because there are bigger things at play here.
Alicent might feel all sorts of things about it but she was NEVER wrong about the danger her children are in.
The dance of dragons began when viserys married alicent.
Childhood made everything feel like it lingered. The time it took for hot chocolate to cool down was eternal. Christmas day took weeks. The two-hour drive to my grandparents' house took us to a new world. It's all too fast now.
oh to be a little cat and sit in a windowsill
the greens 🖤🥀 request-comission / au without the dance of the dragons where the greens are the rulers
Character sheet: Jaehaera Targaryen
“What is it like to be a prophet? Everywhere Cassandra ran she found she was already there.” - Anne Carson
Alicent being paranoid about people (especially her family) discovering her relationship with Cole and its less than ideal timing isn’t that out of character, in my opinion. I feel like her brain is short circuiting because these extremely overwhelming situations with high stakes keep happening, and the religious guilt comes into play as well that she’s not behaving appropriately at all.
I just wish it was executed better, and the writers had more respect for helaena’s character, she already doesn’t have a lot of screentime. Why won’t they take full advantage of Phia’s phenomenal performance and her intriguing arc without cutting it short by centering alicent’s shame? So many opportunities wasted…
And if I said that anyone who’s surprised that alicent didn’t comfort aegon and helaena misunderstands a very pivotal aspect of her character
It is literally in your face this episode how the Otto-Alicent-Targtowers generational emotional trauma is displayed. To care and hurt so deeply but have no ability to properly show it.
Otto attempts to comfort Alicent but she goes away, Alicent looks at a torn Aegon but she can’t even face him, Helaena and Aegon feeling the same pain yet unable to utter a word to each other. Aemond only being able to be vulnerable with a prostitute.
And the fact that Alicent really did try with Helaena (maybe because she’s just easier to love, maybe it’s the direct responsibility she feels) but the need to fulfill duty just overtakes her…god this is good stuff.
An angel loses their wings every time someone says they don’t care for each other when the dynamic is absolutely NOT black and white. This is what we’re watching and have always been watching. The deliciousness of team green is taking their flaws and dysfunction as they are without trying to make them seem angelic and flawless, that’s the best part about them.
I really do wish we had more time to see and explore that further but maybe it’s a blessing since I don’t have a lot of trust with the writers.
“the anger in the eyes of a parents who lost their child”
strong correlation between being anti sansa and having the worst asoiaf opinions known to mankind
