Rest in peace Akihiro Miwa (1935-2026)

I haven't seen anyone talking about this and just wanted to make a quick post on here.

Akihiro Miwa recently passed away peacefully june 20th, and was not only a drag queen and a queer icon, but also the japanese voice of Arceus in the movie Arceus and the jewel of life, as well as the witch from Howl's moving castle and Moro from Princess Mononke.

Rest in peace and thank you for the wonderfull impact you made in this world.

Sorry if you already talked about it somewhere and I couldn't find it, but what are your favorite and least favorite Martian Martian designs? Like, not human disguise, not human just green, but full on alien guy (gender neutral)? What, to you, makes or breaks such design?

Oooh so I guess this means Martian True Forms! To the uninitiated; Martians usually transform into a humansona, an in-between Social Form that is part alien and part human (human but green, the form we mostly see J'onn in), and a True Form- which is their freak alien mode. Usually comic artists sleep on Martian designs from tight deadlines, but some of these stand out!

J'onn's stretchy lanky design by Mark Badger from Martian Manhunter 1988! I think his style lends to an abstract quality that makes this design so delightful. Even if the spikes on J'onn's back feel very "tacked on to a human form". There's something charming about this one.

Just the entirety of Riley Rossmo's Martian designs for Martian Manhunter 2018-19! Rossmo is a fantastic creature designer and he clearly let loose when it came to the martian designs. I don't love how some of these designs are overly gendered (M'yri'ah looking way too much like a Pixar Mom) and I'm neither here or there with the baby blob martians- but I overall really like the sheer amount of effort Rossmo put into these Martians. Yes I even like the freak sex Martian union. In this version, J'onn's True Form is more like a tiny skinny green alien man and while I don't agree with that direction, it's still a bold choice I can respect for wanting to change it up. I personally prefer the True Forms being monstrous and huge.

Young Justice Animated Martian designs! I like how monstrous their True Forms look- in that they're so far removed from human anatomy. My pet peeve with this design is the eternal gritting teeth face they have making these Martians very unexpressive characters. There's also a boring samey-ness to these designs where you can't help but feel like once you see one True Martian Form, you feel like you've seen them all. I imagine making entirely unique designs for each Martian would be taxing for the limited series budget. Still! It betrays this notion that they're a shapeshifter species that can look like anything they want. But we know how messy the racial allegory is on this show.

Man of Tomorrow Martian True Form!! I looove how freak J'onn's True Form is in this movie. Just horrifying. He levitates menacingly, he jumps around like a freak deer, it's great. This might be my favorite in terms of just how out there it is as a design. And it looks great in animation.

and lastly DCAU Martian True Forms <3 I know these are technically pretty close to human anatomy, but there's something so loveable and expressive about this design. I like the big head crest and the lack of nose. When I think about it, the ultimate struggle for making an out-there Martian design is the balance between unrecognizable and expressive. This DCAU design hits that sweet spot. Absolute Martian also hits that spot, but uh- since he's not technically a Martian I won't count him here.

I don't think I have a true least favorite since they all fulfill something different from what I'd like to see. But maybe the YJa ones just bore me the fastest. Favorite overall goes to Rossmo's designs.

A mock-up Cover Art of Cassandra’s possible, future Batman run by yours truly—no, it’s not official yet. A direct callback to the Batman #608 amazing variant cover art by Jim Lee! (you know the one)

I also designed the new logo myself, referencing heavily on the new Future State Batman title logo and Cass’ original Batgirl run in 2000. I think it came out pretty well haha. Pretty proud of it overall; hope you guys like it too!

one of the interesting things about That Talia Spread is you can see the really clear split between Fraction and Jimenez as creatives running this story. Fraction’s script is so dismissive (at best) of Talia and Damian: Talia is written as a manipulator who duped Bruce, there’s these undertones that make her out to be a predator, Damian is directly compared to an explosive, Damian is unstable, Damian has to be saved by his white bloodline, Damian is a punishment, the al Ghuls are culturally foreign and thus malicious etc. Jimenez could have easily leaned into what the script provided and give us the same imagery we’ve seen 1000 times of shadowy bloodstained Damians who were abused into being killers and using lethal violence against the Bats or whatever, the worst possible version of this.

But instead the art looks like this:

None of this mitigates the damage or racism of the finished product but it’s definitely not really lining up with the tone of Fraction’s description either. Damian is being a studious little boy, he’s kicking ass with mama, he’s having a very brotherly petty squabble with Tim that’s played for laughs. The image of Talia holding onto his shoulders is the closest to anything sinister, and even then both of them are in the light and almost melancholy more than anything, and the presence of the shadowy beings behind them feels more threatening to Talia and Damian than they are to Bruce. And then there’s this illustration:

Right under where Fraction has Bruce describe his and Talia’s relationship as ‘unwilling’. Talia is not depicted as a predator here; at most she’s being seductive, but not coercive. The tone of the scene is erotic and gentle, and Bruce is positioned as both physically on top and actively engaging. The art is not communicating what the script is trying to convey, and if anything, it’s contradicting it.

fraction’s batman was always unimaginative at best but it feels particularly sinister to tear down the character of a brown woman (who’s one of the strongest and genuine love interests of bruce) in favour of the new white love interest, completely just making shit up to paint her as an unfeeling seductress AGAIN while insulting her culture for no added plot value all at the same time. how the hell do you even manage that in one single page

saying that talia ran away after dropping damian in his lap LAUGHING and that bruce was unwilling the whole time (grown man mind you) and had to fix the ticking time bomb that is his mixed race child because he grew up with her cultural traditions instead of his own and that the new white love interest is needed here more than his own mother. who are these people WHERE AM I
