I was watching a video on youtube from Dreamscapes Archives and it introduced me to the concept of "Grandiose partnership fantasy"

And the process of that « fantasy » kinda reminded me of the dynamic Sephiroth has with Cloud in FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth :

- Step 1 : « They plant a picture of you two as extraordinary, destined, and above everyone else »

- Step 2 : « They deepen the emotional connection, creating a ‘us against the universe’ mentality »

- Step 3 : « They frame you as partners in a special mission, requiring loyalty, secrecy, and distance from others »

- Step 4 – The hidden truth : « It’s not romantic equality, it’s recruitment, you’re not a partner, you’re a part of their plan. They don’t just want your love, they want your loyalty, your power, and your silence to fuel their fantasy. You’re not chosen, you’re used

Although I’m not sure about the « it’s no romantic », « you’re not a partner » and « you’re not chosen » parts since Sephiroth clearly shows a form of attraction toward Cloud, what do you think about this grandiose partnership fantasy potentially being what’s going through Sephiroth’s head about Cloud in the FF7R trilogy ?

I think Sephiroth's overall fixation with Cloud is extremely layered, built in the desire for grandiose partnership, yes. But also something more as well.

Sephiroth's fixation with Cloud is initially built on ownership and rivalry. He views Cloud as his possession to abuse and control. And for a while, he sticks to that dynamic. At least during OG. I think things sorta start to change around Advent Children, where his fixation on Cloud becomes more physically tied to his own survival and relevance in the world. I view AC as a story that takes place before the timeline potentially loops back again in Remake, so I'm treating Remake Sephiroth as a construct that has already had this gradual shift in development. So by the time Remake rolls around, Sephiroth has stewed on his feelings for Cloud a bit longer. And has, over the course of several realities, come to develop a twisted affection for him.

I think Sephiroth views Cloud as his chosen consort. But I also do think there is a part of Sephiroth that does genuinely feel that Cloud is a kindred spirit of sorts, someone who he can connect with. Which, considering what we know of Sephiroth's life, follows a familiar pattern with him. Sephiroth is clingy. He clings to people as a means of obtaining an identity for himself. I think Sephiroth subconsciously yearns for Cloud because otherwise... he's just alone again. And yes, he's toxic and nasty towards him. He loves tormenting him on a psychological level. But I also think a part of him actually does LOVE Cloud and wants to keep him for himself. Cloud is the link to Sephiroth's humanity. And the only person who truly has the power to be his undoing. Cloud gives him life. But he is also his greatest weakness.
