Trying to explain the dynamic between Amy and Eleven is so funny to me.
Like she’s his best friend! She did have a crush on him once. But that was more like an unhealthy infatuation with the concept of running away that he represented. You see, she had a crush on the idea of him. Partly because he was once her imaginary friend.
And she waited most of her life for him to come back and take her on an adventure. Which she did eventually go on, when she ran away with him on the night before her wedding. During which she did kiss him, but then he took her and her fiancé on a date to Venice. After that they were solidly best friends, all three of them!
Amy is his mother in law, by the way, but she wasn’t yet. The doctor had actually already watched her daughter die, but she wasn’t born yet. (And she was already married to him, but he wasn’t married to her yet, when she died. But I digress). Technically Amy’s the doctors mother in law twice over, because of some throwaway time travel shenanigans with various generations of the British royal family.
But other than that, best friends! And kind of family, but they were definitely family first, before the mother in law thing happened.
(And her fiance / husband / his father-in-law routinely calls the doctor out for being a danger to the people around him and forgetting the importance of small normal human things. The doctor has also kissed him on at least one occasion. And punched him! And also crashed his bachelor party to tell him that Amy kissed him that one time).
The doctor is also the direct cause of the circumstances surrounding her death. But don’t worry, that’s the same with all of his best friends.
Ah, but you see, the Tenth Doctor is a lying liar who lies. If anything, the Doctor's ability to recognize Another Time Lord™ (partial or whole) has gotten exponentially worse throughout the years.
sometimes i think about how the doctor didn't have another male companion after turlough (in classic) and wonder if it's because they realised turlough was the love of their life and they're never gonna find a demented little weirdo like that again
I love the Doctor as a character because they are one of the smartest, strongest people in the universe and yet they also eat dirt and are the reason shampoo has instructions
