I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned āforeverā into the only acceptable definition of success.
Likeā¦ if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, itās a āfailedā business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you donāt actually want to keep doing that, youāre a āfailedā writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, itās a āfailedā marriage.
The only acceptable āwin conditionā is āyou keep doing that thing foreverā. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a ārealā friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a āphaseā - or, alternatively, a āpityā that you donāt do that thing any more. A fandom is ādyingā because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.
I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And itās okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of successā¦ I donāt think thatās doing us any good at all.

Wow I did not expect this to make me tear up. Iāve been to a Darude concert when I was into clubbing (and had a chance to meet him back stage because I was the camera operator for an interview my friend did with him. He was chill and nice). But also, I love the symphony, and played violin. This is the best of two things I love very much :D
Sandstorm is unironically one of my favorite pieces of music ever. Everything about this is amazing and I would have absolutely lost my shit to be in that concert hall.

you know why i like ted lasso, other than it being one of the best tv shows i've seen in the last ten years?
ted lasso is the first time i've seen my mental health accurately portrayed on screen. it doesn't matter if you are the sun-shiniest, funniest, most kind and caring person on the outside. people with mental health issues like anxiety and depression who have been dealing with it for a really long time are really good at hiding their darkest demons, sometimes even from themselves. and it's sometimes overwhelming to deal with, but on the whole, no one notices and just thinks you're a nice person.
when i watched season one with my family, i was the only one who could tell ted was going to have a panic attack in liverpool (my dad thought it was a heart attack; god does it feel similar). now in season 2, i could tell when ted was over-compensating by being super cheery and chirpy and friendly because i do the exact same thing when i feel like i'm falling apart. i had a very "fake it till you make it" attitude towards my mental health in high school, as though being happy on the outside would make the inside feel better. and i see ted doing the same kind of thing in greeting everyone, making each and every person feel special. because maybe, just maybe, if you make everyone around you feel great, you won't feel so empty inside and you can avoid having to go to therapy. but that's not how it works.
tl;dr: ted lasso is the first time that i've seen a character dealing with mental health that wasn't a complete emo basket case and i'm so fucking grateful.
25% is better than 0%. trying a little is better than not trying at all. eating a protein bar is better than nothing. using dry shampoo is better than not showering. cleaning one section of your room or house is better than not cleaning any of it. writing a paragraph of your essay is better than not starting it. whatever you can manage today is okay. you can try again tomorrow. little steps are to be proud of.
This is the mindset helping me with learning to finally eat more healthily and have a better relationship with my body. Every little win is still a win.

an author i love just tweeted about howĀ ābig joy and small joy are the sameā and how she was just as content the other night eating chocolate and cuddling her dog as she was on her Big Trip to new york and honestly. i think thatās it. this morning i was listening to an audiobook while baking shortbread in my joggers and i realised i really didnāt care what Big Things happened in my future as long as i could keep baking and reading at the weekend and maybe that is the kind of bar we have to set to guard ourselves against disappointment. just appreciate and cherish the mundane stuff and see everything else as a bonus.
found it - she was replying to this thread that startsĀ āunpopular opinion: i donāt think your life has to have a purpose, or you a grand ambition; i think itās okay to just wander through life finding interesting things until you dieā and i for one think thatās fucking brilliant
