Happy Winter Solstice! This lovely winter scene is by Canadian regionalist Carl Schaefer from the portfolio 12 Farm Drawings, 1927-1932. Often associated with Canadian regionalists and the Group of Seven, Schaefer also served as an official war artist during World War II and was a teacher at the Ontario College of Art (1948-1970).

Paris’ Eiffel Tower Goes Dark in Solidarity for Syrians>
The Eiffel Tower, a cornerstone of French culture, went dark on Wednesday to display solidarity for the people of Aleppo in the wake of the Syrian government’s capture of the rebel held city.
“At the request of Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, the Eiffel Tower will be symbolically dark this evening, Wednesday, Dec. 14, to demonstrate the support of Paris to the besieged inhabitants of the city of Aleppo in Syria,” Eiffel Tower officials stated.
According to Hidalgo, “This symbolic measure, on a monument recognized the world over, aims to compel the international community to act urgently.” Another statement from the Mayor’s Office revealed that Paris would also be funding two medical convoys for the war-torn city.
In addition to the city’s government, the city’s people are also conveying their support for the people Aleppo. Hundreds gathered at Place Igor Stravinsky, named after the famous Russian composer, to protest Russia’s involvement with the Syrian government.
Given the rise of the xenophobic and overtly Islamaphobic French National Front, the people of Paris’ gestures provide both hope and reassurance that a better future lies ahead.
Bringing Winter to Life: The Shadowbox Art of Kelly Pousette
To see more of Kelly’s art, follow @kpousetteillustration on Instagram.
Winter has always been one of Kelly Pousette’s (@kpousetteillustration) favorite seasons. “There’s something really beautiful about a landscape with snow on it,” says the British Columbia-based artist. “There’s a lot of detail and intricacy you don’t see in the summertime.” Kelly has been drawing and painting since childhood, which evolved into her current shadowbox style. She cuts out her imagined characters and landscapes and stands them upright in a framed three-dimensional scene. “The layers create these amazing shadows; you can change the light and create a different scene without changing the pieces, or you replace one element and make an entirely different scene again,” she says.
The Vancouver native spends plenty of time outdoors to fuel her imagination. “Being outside really brings these scenes and animals to life for me,” says Kelly, whose spirit animal, a fox, makes frequent appearances in her shadowboxes — perhaps even in the ornament-sized version she’ll be creating for her Christmas tree this year.
