Once in a while Iâd like a badass female lead to keep their long hair. Play around with it, tie it back, enjoy it. But most of the time she cuts it or itâs a bob or itâs super short and that makes her somehow more badass. Cause long hair is grabablw so having it short is the go to. But why does that matter in tv? Tv isnât supposed to be realistic.
Iâm just tired of women having to constantly more like men to be considered badass.
Of the badanss female leads in all the shows Iâve watched I can only think of like⌠a couple at most who keep their long hair (and no I donât mean period-shows, I mean âmodernâ shows) And Iâm not dissing the short hair but like⌠why does she HAVE to wear leather, why does she HAVE to have short hair, why does she HAVE to give up most femininity except the male-gaze accepted ones which involves the tight clothes, heels and heavy makeupâŚ.????
Iâm just tiredâŚ..
I think it has more to do with safety more than anything. Long hair is easy to grab in a fight, and that pain can nearly be blinding depending on the person. When itâs short itâs less of a target. I think I was told in my karate class but I was like six so i donât remember much x.x But because I was always exposed to it by media that short hair is safer in more dangerous situations, hereâs a few examples: In Dragon Ball Z Gohan tells Videl itâs be a good idea to cut her hair even if it is pretty so people donât grab it. And sure she was mad at first (more so for other reasons) but the next time they saw each other she cut it, understanding it was a hazard. Of course this anime is about martial arts so itâs definitely safer to keep it short. Poor Gohan got held up by the hair a lot x.x In the game The Walking Dead, Lee tells Clementine to always keep her hair short so itâs harder for the walkers to grab (I think she got grabbed by the hair once? I canât remember itâs been a long time since Iâve seen season 1), and even though in the last season scissors are hard to come by, she still keeps it as short as she can. Even in Xena Warrior Princess Gabrielâs hair was grabbed by Alti and Xena had to use her chakram to cut Gabbyâs hair and free her before she was killed. Also in Yona of the Dawn Yona, the princess gets her hair caught by someone who was trying to capture her, but she cut it herself to get out of the situation. Then there was Enough, the live action movie about a women/mom who lived with a cheating abusive husband. SUCH a good movie. I canât remember the details as to why, but she used to have long hair but after leaving him it was short, probably so he couldnât grab it again (and so heâd have a harder time recognizing her). But yeee! Sorry I grew up with this mentality flsudhf thereâs more but those are the first ones that are fresh in my mind aflsudhf
I know that in real life itâs more dangerous to have long hairâŚ. But this is television and movies. They donât HAVE to be accurate and they usually arenât! Male protagonists can have long hair (Thor before it was cut in Ragnarok never had his hair pulled and I dare anyone to give me three examples of men with long hair on modern rv that had that happen cause murder mysteries and crime shows have dudes with long hair sometimes and it just doesnât happen).
A few examples of women with long hair in modern setytng are Wonder Woman and Emma Swan. They are proof you donât have to have short hair to be a female protagonist that kicks ass. I just get really tired of them taking people like Daisy and Korra and having them cut their hair to be more badass. You donât have to have their hair pulled! It doesnât have to be a thing! Itâs just an excuse!
This is just a commentary on the fact that in modern media itâs âthe thingâ to make female protagonists have short hair. Itâs more âmasculineâ and Iâm tired of femininity being devalued in media unless it is specific femininity catered to the male gaze (IE specific makeup and heels).
Cause you notice itâs PERFECTLY acceptable for these same women protagonists to fight in high heels even though for the sake of accuracy in actual fighting heels are absolute shit. If they were going for accuracy the female protag would be wearing non-heeled boots. Theyâre not in it for accuracy theyâre in it for their male-gaze-centric-fantasy in which a badass female is masculine but feminine in makeup and tight/skimpy clothes because itâs more a power fantasy for them like that.
JustâŚ. give me female protagonists who are people and allowed to have their femininity and embrace it, you know?
