1. look at the list of majors your college offers and narrow it down to the ones that spark interest/you already enjoy. did you like your high school physics class? put physics on your list!
2. take intro level classes for some of the majors that interest you. this will give you an overall feel for what the major entails and you can find out if you’re actually interested in it.
3. be honest with yourself. are you avoiding going with your interest because it seems like a tough major or you’re afraid you won’t get a job after you graduate? honestly, there are VERY FEW career paths you can choose that you won’t be able to find a job in after you graduate, maybe almost none. think about it, wouldn’t you rather make some money as an artist and love your job than make a ton of money as a doctor and hate your job?
4. don’t choose a major that you think other people would want you to choose. if your friends tell you not to be a theatre major because it’s hard to make it in that field or you think it’s not “studyblr” enough, but that’s what you truly want to do, you’re going to go through life regretting not giving it a shot.
5. talk to the department head or professors in departments that interest you. find out what types of classes you’ll be taking, what types of jobs students in that field get after graduation, etc. they’ll be an extremely useful asset to you!
6. talk to students in that major to see how they enjoy the classes and the subject. this is how i chose my major!
7. don’t worry about it too much. i know seniors who are still worried about their choice of major (or lack of). everyone has trouble figuring it out, even if they seem so sure. though you should spend time figuring it out, if you end up having to change your major a couple of times, it’s not as big of a deal as you think it is.
8. remember- there’s no shame in being undecided. i know plenty of very smart people who go into college undecided. honestly, college is for figuring out what you want to do, and people who go in knowing exactly what they want to do almost always end up changing their mind!
9. stuck between two? do ‘em both! for my first year of college, i was double majoring in government and mathematics because i loved them both and couldn’t decide, ended up helping me decide between the two!
