Small Sword

Dated: 18th century

Culture: German

Measurements: overall length 107cm

The sword has a straight, double-edged blade of hexagonal section. The entire length is engraved and gilt, and at the base there’s a motto that reads “hic solus splendor amaerat” with a star, woven bands and floral motifs. Continuing this design is the effigy of the Emperor between sun, moon and stars and the inscription “Hro Kayserl. Mayestät”, and the seven electorates Chur-Mayntz, Chur-Colln, Chur-Trier, Chur-Bayern, Chur-Sachsen, Chur-Brandenburg, Chur-Pfalz e Chur-Braunschweig-Lüneburg, finishing with the effigy of Justice.

The iron hilt features silver decorations. The double sword-shell depicts four noblemen on horseback on the external surface and two on the inside one, enriched with beaded bands. The quillon-block, arms of the hilt, guard and pommel are decorated with floral and geometrical motifs, while the wooden grip is wrapped in iron and copper wire binding and has moor’s heads.
