*trying to pitch public transportation to Americans* it’s like a legal form of texting while driving
you know a schism is fucked up when I'm siding with the pope
I’m listening to the book Regime Change by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan which is about what they’ve pieced together about the first year of the Tonald Drump presidency and what happened in private from a bunch of interviews they did with people who were in the room in these meetings and whatnot.
Anyways something I didn’t know but is not surprising to me is that apparently Drump at least partially picked his cabinet members based on who he thought looked good on tv.
I’m listening to it instead of reading it btw because I had an audible credit leftover and my dad couldn’t buy it for us to share because it’s already sold out. You can’t get it online right now. But if you’re willing to read the kindle version or listen to the audiobook it’s really interesting.
They kind of do juuuust a little too much editorializing I think in order to give the book a more coherent narrative for a mainstream audience but other than that I think it’s really interesting. Nobody else has this kind of look into what’s going on behind closed doors in that stupid ass whitehouse.
I think this book so far confirms to me what I’ve suspected for a long time.
That being that Drump is actually really good at understanding people and societal norms and actually has a lot of emotional intelligence. He just uses that power for evil.
There also seems to be a lot of infighting in this administration behind the scenes but Drump likes drama so he actually encourages it. It’s known to basically everyone in his inner circle that he’s constantly trying to pit JD Vance and Marco Rubio against each other, trying to get them to compete for his endorsement for president in 2028.
Hearing about how Drump talks to Putin and other dictators also reminds me of how salesmen often fall for common sales tactics.
I also know this isn’t happening but every time a private meeting with him is described, because of the way he’s portrayed in this book I imagine him eating popcorn the entire time. Like he’s looking to be entertained and to make good television.
They are really really licking the boots of fossil fuel company executives over there.
There’s an incident described in this book where an oil executive describes how they can only drill in this one marshy region of Alaska during the winter when the ground freezes solid enough for them to drive equipment out there and after the meeting Stephen Miller was like okay what do we need to do to get you your oil faster
And the oil executive was like you can’t change the laws of physics man this is an issue out of our control and Stephen Miller was like no really just tell me what you need and we’ll get it done.
Like kissing ass to the point where they’re offering to break the laws of physics I guess.

@anthropologist-on-the-loose get peer-reviewed because your shared experience with the subject of the painting really heightened the emotional impact of this artwork for me ( An impact which was already high tbh. The idea that Pompeii was built by generations, buried by generations, uncovered by generations. What if I just started screaming and never stopped. )
"Built by generations, buried by generations, uncovered by generations" is ruining me, thanks
Me, pointing to the mirror: Do NOT become The Joker about this. This isn’t even a Condiment Man situation.
One day I might stop being so obsessed with my partners… today is not that day. They’re so cute and sweet and wonderful.

She's being so big and brave.
did i tell you guys i failed at being sexually harassed at work today?
okay so, guy at work, who i find out afterwards is famous at this place for being a sex pest, comes up and starts with what i also learn is his favorite opener to conversations where he’s going to be a sex pest, namely: “Do you know where the term ‘blow job’ comes from?”
and here he made his first fatal error. his moment of hubristic sex pesting. because of course i know where the term blow job comes from, i love learning about sex and the history of sexual terms! i know so much about oral sex that i could write a book on it!
