Chad Michael Murray as Mirabeau Lamar in new stills of the History’s show Texas Rising.
This was my favorite scene of the entire season. Because you could just see the teasing glint in Peggy’s eyes, and Jack just paused, thought about it, then grinned right back at her and went “Why the hell not?” It was an inside joke and character development and chemistry all rolled up into one moment that made me all warm and fuzzy.
That right there is a man who is not afraid of learning from his mistakes.
Jack Thompson is the king, period.
you know what Marge ? i’m gonna do that for you.
Sousa / Vega / Carter / _____?
Jack Thompson looking down the barrel of a gun
If it is often in times of danger and stress that we show what we are made of and who we are, then I think more than one occasion has shown that Jack Thompson is a good person and has an instinctive care for the people around him
When Sousa got hit with the gas in Season 1 at the theater, it was Jack who ran to his side to help him up
When Peggy, the Commandos, and Jack were searching through the building in Russia, Jack was the one who stayed in the rear multiple times to watch their backs even though he’d be the first to get hit with a bullet by the chasing enemy gunfire
When Howard was giving that speech in Season 1 in hopes to draw out a shooter, it was Jack who didn’t hesitate to push Howard out of the way of a bullet and kept Howard and Jarvis behind him, shield them with his own body
When guns were pointed at Sousa and Samberly with every intention to kill them, Jack put himself between them and the bullet, pulling a dangerous bluff that would mean the end of his life too in order to save the others
When they found Jason Wilkes and were getting him out, Jack didn’t hesitate to help Peggy carry Jason and supporting the other man
Jack Thompson can be an asshole, he can be easily blinded by his drive and ambition, but his core instinct is still to protect and defend, he wants to help, he wants to shield people from danger
He’s not a perfect man but he is still a good man, just as Peggy believes

You’re a good man, Jack.
You should smile more.
When I see people dismiss Jack’s war trauma or they cheer on about Peggy’s comment to Jack about burying the truth and hoping someone will pin a medal on him, it honestly makes me sad
It makes me sad because it’s like we’ve forgotten how traumatic the world wars were, us behind our computer screens fighting for social justice forget how our present day issues and trauma doesn’t erase other legitimate trauma of the past
Yes, Jack Thompson is a sexist jerk, but it doesn’t make his war trauma any less real or damaging, and the fact that Peggy used that trauma against him, it shouldn’t be something encouraged at all - seriously, how many people on tumblr go on and on everyday about how people should be safe from things that trigger them, so why? Why cheer when Peggy is using something triggering to Jack against him? How is that okay just because he is a sexist jerk? Does that somehow make his trauma any less legitimate or real?
Peggy knew something in secret, something painful and traumatic, something that triggers damaging feelings of the past, that isn’t okay for her to use against him
She crossed a line, she knew it too, the look on her face after she shouted, she knew she had done something wrong, that she shouldn’t have said that - that while her intentions are correct, she should not have used that against him
She crossed a line and even Sousa knew that
Tumblr fandom can’t be preaching about making the world safe for people who have trauma, can’t be preaching about never using people’s trauma and triggers against them yet be a hypocrite that just because Peggy did it to Thompson who is sexist and a jerk so it’s fine
You can’t have it both ways - either it is or it isn’t
Jack’s war trauma isn’t some fake event to generate sympathy, he fought in the war, he faced those trauma, it is legitimate no matter what kind of person he may be
Being a white male sexist jerk doesn’t erase that legitimate real trauma can still exist and should not be used against a person who is mentally effected by it
I’ve been riding you since you took this case, and you’re telling me you’re just gonna let it slide? Well, I wouldn’t say that. I did threaten to shoot you. Yeah. I remember.
Jack Thompson - the most fascinating, realistic, and human character on Agent Carter
Full disclosure here, Jack Thompson was not my favorite character when the show started in Season 1, that was Edwin Jarvis - and while I adore Chad Michael Murray as an actor, he certainly wasn’t the reason I was watching the show, that honor belonged to Hayley Atwell.
But along the way in Season 1, Jack Thompson became more and more interesting as they began to peel back the layers of his character, as little details were sprinkled in and we began to see a character who wasn’t just a cardboard box cut out but a real 3-dimensional character. Season 2 only helped in bringing in more complexity to a character that always seem to walk that fine line between good and evil.
It’s easy to label Jack Thompson as one thing or one personality or one trait - it’s easy to just call him a sexist and a jerk and be done with it - but from the moment they began to broaden this character, I found him to be the most realistic and human character of the whole show.
We love our heroes vs villains, we love seeing the world in good vs evil, but Jack Thompson straddles that line, he is the most like us - we ourselves in real life don’t always do the right thing, we are sometimes tempted by our weaknesses, our flaws, our ambitions - we sometimes make mistakes, big or small - we sometimes lash out in pain or anger or jealousy or even learned prejudice - and even if we are adults, we sometimes still have so much to learn about ourselves and the world around us.
Jack Thompson is full of contradictions, just like us.
We, like Jack, are not just one single thing that defines us.
Jack is a man who can be a real asshole yet when a fellow agent dies, he remembers to inform the girlfriend while his boss calls the wife.
Jack is a man who can fall prey to ambition, opportunity, and selfishness but can be swayed by encouragement and genuine belief of goodness.
Jack is a man who can be a brave agent yet also cowardly and afraid to tell an ugly truth.
Jack is a man who can fall to learned prejudice but learn to change and be better than he was before.
Jack Thompson is us - and perhaps sometimes that’s why people can’t accept him because we do not want to see a mirror of ourselves and our mistakes reflected back to us. After all, how many of us have told lies in fear of repercussions? How many of us have told lies so big sometimes that we don’t even know how to tell the truth anymore without disappointing everyone around us? How many of us have been selfish in thinking of our own careers and advancement, even if sometimes it’s at the expense of others? How many of us have allowed our own ambition to fuel competition against others? How many of us sometimes take two steps forward and one step back in our own development?
People are not just good and evil, and neither is Jack. And after all, life doesn’t exactly follow a straight line.
For a man intent on showing all the confidence and swagger of an alpha macho man - he’s incredibly proud and insistent on calling his grandmother “Gam Gam”.
For a man who is suppose to be falling in line with a shifty organization of his father’s friend, he spends more time not actually doing anything to really help the organization, more worried about going to Peggy about everything and convincing her to leave, and purposely keeping quiet about secrets and things that he knows that Peggy is doing or knows is doing against the organization which he never mentions it to anyone.
For a man who some label a coward, he certainly never hesitated in pushing Howard Stark out of the way of a bullet, and that was entirely on instinct the moment the gunshot went off.
All these contradicting behaviors - that’s what makes Jack such an interesting character to watch, because, like a real person, he is never just defined by one thing, and just when you think you figured him out, he can still surprise you. And it is because of this that he became my favorite character.
Most of the characters on Agent Carter are pretty set in who they are, how they act, how they respond - they fit in those neat little boxes of good guys and bad guys, heroes and villains - but Jack Thompson, he’s a little bit of everything, he is the wild card, and he still has so much more room to grow.
I don’t believe his story is finished (show renewal or not).
•wake me up when it’s all over, when I’m wiser and I’m older•
A JACK THOMPSON TRIBUTE (Season 1 & 2)
For over two seasons, we have watched Jack Thompson grow from a sexist antagonistic jerk to willing and helpful ally. In fact, it is safe to say that he grew the most out of any character on the show. As a fan, I cheered when he made the right choices and lamented when he stumbled and fell just a bit to his blinding ambition, but ultimately the good man Peggy Carter believed in did come through and help them save the day.
This song, the lyrics, it speaks to me so much of Jack’s character - this young man often so lost and needing a guiding hand, someone who could grow wiser and older.
Here is hoping that Agent Carter will be renewed for Season 3 so that we can see Jack’s journey continue!
And thank you so much to actor Chad Michael Murray for giving Jack such beautiful complexity and depth!
