Thinking about how "Gundam" is a brand in a weird kinda meta way.

Like, it's a brand irl. A huge multimedia franchise with the classic grandpa Gundam and it's descendants as mascot. Internationally recognisable and extremely valuable.

But "Gundam" is also a brand in universe as well. A Gundam is a type of mobile suite that it's developers have decided to call a Gundam because Gundams have an in universe reputation as highly advanced, heroic, tide turners. Having a brand new state of the art mobile suite on the team is great but having a brand new state of the art Gundam is a statement.

In UC they descend from the design of RX-78-2 of course but the biggest similarity between various Gundam predecessors is they gave it the Gundam color scheme and stuck a V-fin on it.

What I'm saying is I want to see the in universe mobile suit nerd forums exploding into discourse about what does and doesn't count as a Gundam every time they put out a new model just like we do IRL every time there's a new show.

Gone Ahead 7.2

siiigh oh John.... Began my second attempt at reading Pale this summer and have been really invested! I don’t talk about my feelings on wildbow’s webserials on here very often but I’ve just been so totally gripped by the John Stiles & Lucy throughline in this book I have to talk a little about it 😫

One of my biggest worries my first time reading Pale was that I was soooo very invested in where it was going + the potential for a familiar relationship that it was a little scary to continue. Was worried it would be brushed aside/not focused on (can’t always trust wildbow to focus on the same things I value, alas) and that was too heartbreaking to consider. Luckily (and torturously!!) this was not the case!! Really crazy stuff and really impactful, it’s almost on the level of how I feel about Taylor in Worm where I’ll just cry any time I think too long about it 🥲

I’m crazy enough about it right now that I even made a playlist to be sad to, so for the smattering of Pale fans on here uhhh here’s my super mopey John/Lucy playlist. I am currently insane about them & grieving!!!!!!!

I think part of the reason I enjoyed Gundam X so much was it being a break from Tomino's style after binging through Victory.

Don't get me wrong, I like Tomino's work. He tends to tell stories that have deceptively deep characters and politics (If we could get him to be normal about women that would be great tho). But his stuff tends to suffer in its comprehensibility.

Characters act strangely, say bizarre things seemingly unprompted, and have seemingly overblown or contradictory reactions to things. I feel like you can almost always sit down and puzzle out how that behavior actually makes sense for that character afterwards. Which gives them a real feeling of depth and interiority; just like real people their actions make sense to them even if they aren't rational or obvious.

After War Gundam X on the other hand still has well realized characters and ideas it wants to communicate but it's much more willing to just tell you.

It gets major points from me for having the same ideological conflict around newtypes and the future of humanity as, say, CCA but instead of one side gaining a symbolic narrative victory the show grabs everyone by the shoulders and tells them to their face that they need to let it go.
