Thyme’s embark result has been unexpectedly interesting and I can’t wait to get more information to share with you

Okay I’m too impatient to wait for more information. Thyme’s result:

My gut reaction was somewhere between “oh my god embark is wrong” and “oh my god the drama if this is right” with a bit of a heart attack!

To keep this summary short so nobody else freaks out, I contacted them and:

yo the boy is a springer. his life isn’t a lie! which I kind of figured after I thought about it for more than a few minutes. I know there’s a few purebreds turned out to be mixed, but with Thyme it was….very unlikely.

Embark doesn’t change things willy nilly, so the thing is: the algorithm got confused because Thyme is from lines of purebred english springer spaniels that are not in the reference panel. Plus a bit of science team investigation.

I think it’s really damn interesting that a combination of Australian, New Zealand and Swedish lines will be so different to the American reference database that the algorithm goes “hmmm mostly ESS but also I think pretty similar to cockers and that really rare field spaniel breed then like 25% of I give up the combination is unfamiliar”.

In embark’s defence, they do give this disclaimer on their site:

Can Embark identify the breeds in a dog that was born outside the U.S.? Through the course of our test development, we have observed that certain breeds sometimes have quite different genetic breed signatures in different geographical regions, particularly as compared to the same breed in Europe or Australia. Due to these geographic variations, Embark is only offered in geographical areas where we have collected a substantial reference panel of samples.

We are quite clearly outside the usual reference panel. And like…the results aren’t entirely wrong. He’s definitely a spaniel!

and most importantly, he is cleared to be a genetically healthy boy. Not even a carrier. So here’s hoping he’s with me a long time!

I do think it is still the best DNA test for dogs out there. Just needs more reference panels across geographic splits - but what I like about embark is they are constantly adding and improving on their database! Which is why I’ve asked for a Thistle re-run, to see if her results change any with the expanded databases.

Do you have any dog training YouTube channels you like? I'm trying to get back into training with my dog and could use some good channels to watch.

These are the youtube channels I like :D

Stonnie Dennis - a dog trainer on youtube, covers a wide range of topics in short bursts

Tyler Muto - confidence building in dogs, heeling, creative use of space

kikopup - lots of clicker training ideas, training calmness and shaping

Tab - another person who can give a wide range of clicker training and teaching new behaviours

Jeff Gellman - confidence building, fearful and aggressive dogs

@shotinthekidney has a youtube channel I actively stalk, I have loved the training snippets Martin shared and equally love Laura’s.

I actually have an account with Leerburg, but they post good snippets and freebies to youtube too.

Ohio Teen Dog - I don’t remember subscribing to this one, but they have good videos of teaching basic positions!

Janet Finley - she has very useful books too, geared towards building calm and confident dogs. Lots of videos on leash handling, how YOU affect the dog etc

Ripley’s Adventures - this one is more about enrichment and DIY dog puzzles

Pams Dog Acadamy - this is more about body awareness, but you need that for building healthy bodies and minds!

APDA - this is a series of videos on how to weightpull with your dog SAFELY e.g fitting harnesses, how the dog should be taught to pull to reduce strain (head down!)

Counter condition videos - not updated in awhile but good collection of CC approaches

Kristy Crestejo - covers lots of aspects of training from loose leads to impulse control to how I found her - how to teach two dogs to run circles around you in opposite directions to each other :D Goals!

Alpha Dog Training - yes, I was quite put off by the company name too lmao. Has some good videos on training whistle recalls in a positive manner

K9Pro - primarily their blog posts and videos dealing with aggressive or fearful dogs and also their youtube videos.

This is an awesome list!! I really hope you don’t mind if I point out that Jeff Gellman, whatever your stance on prongs + e-collars are, uses prongs and e-collars incorrectly and I would not recommend taking his advice or consider him a reputable source of information.

Some examples (the videos are timestamped!) :

Here’s one of his videos about a dog who jumps when greeting people and he actually yanks the dog so hard with the prong that it yelps. (and then he tries to justify it by saying that “the owner was struggling for a while” and “dogs are killed in shelters for jumping” like what?? no they’re not?) https://youtu.be/HG8pFClSnQI?t=234

And another video where he’s trying to teach an aggressive dog not to eat out of a dishwasher??? what??? literally sets the dog up to fail by placing full plates of food in a dishwasher and uses the e-collar on a high enough setting so that when the dog starts eating it and Jeff pushes the button, the dog yelps. https://youtu.be/M-RK24CCH4Q?t=639

Imo there’s way better and safe methods for dealing with these behavioral (?) issues. Ya know, like closing your dishwasher? Seriously who puts food in their dishwasher?? You know you’re supposed to dump and rinse the plates before you put them in, right? And then trying to justify it by saying “welp! its better than being euthanized!” I personally believe that using these tools in this way will cause a dog to be more fearful/aggressive and make them have less confidence.
