Edward “Ted” Tonks was sort of a miracle child, being born just as Caroline Tonks was going through menopause after trying to conceive for years. She and her husband Theodore were absolutely thrilled, and they made sure to only give him the best with the little that they had.
When Ted was around 8, his mother had began to develop a tremor. Sometimes, she’d be holding a plate and accidentally drop it while she was cleaning it. It never really occurred to Ted that it was anything of a problem. He merely chalked it up as his mother not being as young as she used to be. He and his father would make sure to help around the house and kept her from doing anything to strenuous, but as the years went by, she had only gotten worse.
When Ted was 14, he had to help her get out of bed, feed her, and occasionally give her a sponge bath, if his father couldn’t. He could see how frustrated she would get when she couldn’t do simple tasks, but he never saw her complain once. He made sure to never let her see just how worried he was, and since he barely ever saw her during the school year, he worked hard to gain top marks and take care of himself so she didn’t have to worry about him.
In the middle of Ted’s 6th year, just a week after Valentine’s Day, he got an owl from his father that told him that his mother had passed. He took a week off school and went home. The father and son pair kept it together for most of the wake, but after the burial, they couldn’t help but finally burst into tears. Ted had to go back to school the next day, and he knew just how puffy and dark his eyes looked, but no one seemed to say anything. His friends did their best to help him out with the schoolwork he had missed, and Alice was there to help him out when he got really overwhelmed.
It was silly, but after his mother passed away, he would come up to her room every night during the week of her wake, and just lay in her bed, imagining she was stroking his hair. It was one of those moments where he would rather trade his magic abilities just to have her back because all the magic in the world couldn’t peacefully bring someone back to life. Ted was an only child, so he didn’t have many people to talk to while he was growing up, his first best friends being his parents. His dad taught him about hard work, perseverance, and how to beat the odds even if he was a muggleborn. It was because of him that he was at the top of most of his classes. But it was his mother who taught him manners, social graces, how to respect everyone (men and women alike), and to appreciate art.
Sometimes he would hide in her walk-in closet and either paint, draw, read, or simply lie on the ground, taking comfort in the scent of her clothes. His mother was probably why he had such high standards of his perfect woman. He hasn’t met anyone quite like her yet.
