I been thinking about the dung eater again and it makes me mad in the insane way that he isn't that popular, even among the more devoted fans of elden ring broadly. There is so much potential and so many implications left by his character that he genuinely feels like one of the main pillars holding up the worldbuilding. How can you not take one look at the things he represents and the stark contrast he paints against the "world-saving" plot points and attitudes presented by other characters, and not be enthralled and fascinated by the directions and paths he opens up in broader narrative. What the hell.
Maybe it's the disabled tranny in me, but the dung eater isn't necessarily an evil character the way so many people think he is. He's not even edgy, as I've seen some people say. The dung eater has a very specific goal in mind for how to change the golden order based on the flaws he has identified within in, and he believes wholeheartedly in that goal. The "edginess" of the dung eater doesn't stem from him taking a "fuck everything, I want everyone to die and suffer eternally" stance, it's the result of him seeing the persecution and discrimination against a very real portion of the land between's population and saying "if you want to hate these people, then I will gladly become the thing you hate and fear so much"
I think his choice of words when describing his goal and the things he does is also very indicative of this sentiment; the golden order sees the omen and misbegotten population as cursed beings who do not receive nor deserve the grace of the greater will, so he frames his removal of souls from the golden order's cycle of souls as "cursing" people
At no point in the game do we learn what it is that the dung eater is doing to people in order to remove them from that cycle. We get vague hints, from the way bodies are strapped to chairs and from his ties to kappa mythology, but aside from the dung eater and others describing the process as "defilement" we have no idea what he is doing. He could just be ripping out souls the same way you remove sellen's primal glintstone. He could be doing things the kappa method. He could be doing all kinds of things, but however he does it is entirely irrelevant, because the point isn't the process: it's the fact that he deliberately chooses to play into the idea of "defilement" and of corruption. He is hated for what he stands for, so he leans into the hate and makes it his own weapon against the golden order. If the order wishes for those touched by the crucible to be shunned and loathed, then that's what he will become
I'm not done. As was described in another post, elden ring has a lot of botany tied into its themes. The people of the lands between bury their dead among the roots of the erdtree, which in turn draws those dead into itself and processes their souls through it before they are reborn into someone else. People - or more specifically, their souls - are the fertilizer of the erdtree. Fertilizer in the real world is commonly made out of animal waste, therefore souls in the lands between can be considered analogous to the kind of animal dung used to fertlize plants
The dung eater's title isn't meant to be a sophomoric scat joke, it's a tongue in cheek description of what he does and how he feels about the cycle of souls within the golden order. He spitefully refers to the process of removing souls from that cycle as cursing or defilement, because that is how the golden order chooses to characterize omens and the dung eater himself, and so he in turn chooses to become one of the things they despise. He becomes the loathsome defiler of souls, and therefore a defiler of the golden order itself
He is spitting on the golden order and the greater will by refusing to shy away from its accusations against him and his actions. He has no interest in appealing to the sensibilities of people by trying to win them over or make his opinion on omens more palatable, so instead he embraces their scrutiny and throws it back in their face. The curse of being touched by the crucible becomes a blessing; the souls that feed the erdtree and become graced with gold in return become nothing more than excrement. What was sacred becomes profane, what was profane becomes sacred, and when all are cursed, nobody is cursed

Analyzing the politics of a work that's meant to be apolitical is actually a really interesting exercise because it asks you to critically examine what the creator considers to be "political" in the first place. Which ideas are just How Things Are, and which ones are Political, and how is that influenced by the creator's beliefs?

I went outside and got an education, that's where I learned that you can obtain knowledge and insight through analytical methods, then noticed that some people who sit on the internet yelling at strangers get really mad about that constantly.
So actually if you really wanted to use your analysis skills you'd realize that what people are annoyed about is the implication that there's never a story or creative work they can create that can escape people like you attempting to assign political meaning to it when they just don't want that. That in fact people's presumptions about life are not, in fact, political (at best they are cultural, which is not an inherently facet of politics). And that by you people arrogantly pushing this idea you are intruding on the fact that a lot of people use fiction as escapism from politics and insisting that "urm no actually your favourite cartoon actually has politics cause no human being is 100% unbiased" is in fact, supremely fucking annoying
"Stop having fun wrong, it ruins my fun when you have fun wrong, it's not enough for me to just scroll past the analysis I don't like, if anyone anywhere is saying that the cartoon exists in a political context that's undermining my enjoyment of it!"

In my experience people who talk about analysis the way you're talking about it are the ones who move on to harassing the creator off the internet for clout, but go off, I guess.

Short analysis of the politics of Elden ring:
Feudalism fucking sucked, all these monarchs and gods are assholes and their religions are built largely on selfish misrepresentations of reality.
You can get deeper with it, but surface level political analysis in a lot of stories will not ruin the enjoyable escapism of clapping the shit out of godrick for being a little bitch

When I was in college, my Stage Craft teacher showed us this. Basically the machine heats up a sheet of plastic, and once it’s malleable enough it’ll be blown up to make room for whatever you want to imprint in the plastic. Once it’s in place, the air reverses and the plastic vacuum-sucks all around the object.
He demonstrated it on a baby doll and it was like a baby had been frozen in carbonite. I got to take it home and I still have frozen-carbonite-baby to this day (his name is Franklin XD)
