Folks have got to understand that they probably aren't messed up by some Secret Big Trauma that they just can't remember; but rather by a million tiny microtraumas that they do mostly remember but don't even register as traumatic because nobody actually understood that these things would cause trauma, much less stack on each other over the years.

This is why psychologists have started taking more of an interest in CPTSD in the last 10-15 years. What most people know as PTSD is a response to a single, intensely traumatic event (or even a series of events). However, CPTSD (chronic post-traumatic stress disorder) is caused by living for years in a situation where your nervous system cannot catch a break. Even if nothing huge ever happened to you, you always had to be on guard for a thousand little things that could and did happen.

After years and years of this, your nervous system gets "stuck" in an activated threat response. It never really lets you rest, and if this started when you were a kid, you may not develop a lot of neural pathways that you should have, because your brain was too focused on keeping you safe to bother with little things like "genuine human connection" and "interpersonal attachment."

No lie, Complex PTSD/CPTSD is HUGE.

If you are disabled, if you are queer, if you are chronically ill, if you are the survivor of a toxic but not abusive relationship, if you grew up or lived under the threat of harm but no "actual" harm (or "very little" harm) was done, you may have CPTSD that isn't getting caught because CPTSD looks different from PTSD.

I think it's also important to point out that trauma isn't necessarily "caused" or measured or defined by the severity of the event or the harm or the behavior perpetrated against the victim. Trauma really breeds in the absence of care and nurturing provided to the victim when bad things happen. In the absence of supports that allow for healing and build the resilience that lets people (ESPECIALLY children) "bounce forward" and not just bounce back, when bad things happen - this is where trauma grows wild like a choking weed.

This is part of why some people can feel "broken down," maybe permanently, by what SEEMS to some like a small singular event, while others can go through wave crash after wave crash, or even a "huge" singular event, and find healing of a sort, and get to a place where they feel on solid ground, even if they've got hella scars.

A nurturing, caring, positive relationship with one, single adult (doesn't have to even be a relative) can shield a child from many negative effects of trauma and diminish lifelong fallout - there are so many studies about this. And that's on up through age 17.

And one of the reasons I point this out is because people who suffer trauma, especially complex trauma from toxic environments, is that the, "Well, it wasn't as bad as X," or, "Well at least X didn't happen to you," or any other horrible version of "Other people have it worse/You didn't have it bad enough to even deserve to complain," is COMPLETELY INVALID. You don't have to win the Trauma Olympics to deserve care. You don't even have to show up on the field. You are valid, your experience is valid.

Being hurt, scared, confused, sad, not feeling safe, and not getting the help you need... That shit causes trauma. Whether it's a huge catastrophe that EVERYBODY understands, or something that only a smaller select group of folks can relate to; whether it happened one time, all at once, or just poisoned the environment where you were... That shit causes trauma.

And I think that needs to be talked about more.
